It all started when Thomas Jefferson got a message from Great Britain and France saying they didn't want us trading with the other. Britain captured our ships and were giving the Native Americans weapons making it harder for us to expand. A Native American leader named Tecumseh We tried to stay neutral but in the end, our new President James Madison gave in to a group of Congressmen called the Warhawks, and we plunged into war.
The war of 1812 was nicknamed "The War at Sea" At first, we tried to attack Canada. but we were unsuccessful. Even though we failed that invasion, the USS Constitution defeated a British ship. What made that battle special was that so many ships seemed to bounce off the USS Constitution that it got the nickname "Old Ironside". In the end, we lost 71 people, and it boosted our confidence as a country
