Elementary Distance Learning

September 3, 2020

Dear Students and Families,

Welcome to Mankato Area Public Schools Distance Learning for K-5 students! We’re excited about the opportunity to get to know you and we are looking forward to a happy, healthy and productive school year. Our school continues to grow. We are currently at 758 students and 31 staff.

Entrance Conferences

We are so looking forward to meeting each student and family at entrance conferences. If you haven’t signed up for pre-entrance conferences, please follow this link and be sure to use the homeroom teacher in Infinite Campus when choosing the conference time. You will be receiving a link from your child’s teacher to meet in a google meet. This is a time to get to know you and share our schedules and expectations for distance learning. Thanks for partnering with us.

Picking up Devices and Student Materials for Distance Learning

Please stop by the table outside the office of your child’s home school on Tuesday, Sept. 8 and Wednesday, Sept. 9, between 8-2 to pick up your child’s device (if you filled out a need on the census verification). There will be handouts on how to use SeeSaw/Google Classroom and student materials (paper activities) for all students. Virtual classrooms will be using the school supplies as part of the paper/pencil activities. If you need assistance getting supplies, please let office staff know in your home building. We may have other pick up times if there are necessary supplies for learning this year.

It will be crucial to have your child attend the “LIVE” sessions. This is the time students will collaborate and learn from each other as well as have instruction from the teachers. There will be LIVE times scheduled for smaller groups, individuals and office hours to ask questions and get clarification. Teachers will be doing daily morning attendance for state reporting so show up ready to learn and engage! We will also be expecting students to turn in assignments in their SeeSaw and/or Google Classroom environments. This will help our teachers know what your child has strengths in and where there are challenges. This will also help as we continue to provide the rigor for your child.

Our Distance Learning Community Classrooms

Our virtual classrooms will be made up of students from our surrounding Mankato Area Public Elementary schools with a “homeroom” teacher from one of our elementary schools. Each grade level student will be working with a team of passionate teachers to teach our core content in reading, math, writing, content and special areas will start towards the end of September. You are lucky to have eager teachers ready to teach all learners!

Our teachers have exciting, well planned schedules that will have hours consistent with the normal school hours in our elementary buildings of 8:00-1:40 for teaching time. From 1:40 - 2:30 teachers will be planning together and engaging in professional development activities. Students will have lessons that incorporate the arts scheduled for them towards the end of September or early October between 1:40-2:30. Please know that teachers may respond to after hour messages the following work day. To allow for flexibility for students and families, work can be turned in after hours. Once again, please be engaged, on time and ready for all LIVE sessions.

September Schedules for in School and Distance Learning

Our September schedules will look very similar to in person schedules. Much of September will be the motto, “Connect before Content.” Teachers will be getting to know your child and creating a classroom community. Much of September will be helping students and families adjust to a schedule, providing opportunities to understand how to use SeeSaw and/or Google Classroom and effectively engage in a Google Meet. Routines are a huge part of the day and much practice will go into the routines of distance learning.

Lunch pickup will be at East High School for Eagle Lake, Kennedy, Washington, Rosa Parks and Franklin schools and West High School for Jefferson, Roosevelt, Bridges, Hoover, and Monroe students from 11 am - 1 pm. Distance learning students can pre-order meals. Meals will need to be ordered before 8 am the day of pickup. The student's lunch account will not be charged until the meal is picked up for purchase. A parent or student can pick up their meal from 11 am - 1 pm, Monday - Friday. This will be done through Infinite Campus in a new section called Campus Store. See video for how to pre-order meals.

  • Meals will be picked up at East-Door 20 and West-Door 17

  • Kitchen staff will approach the car and find out how many meals and to scan the student barcode. (Barcodes will be given out at the drive up and the student will be asked to bring it back for meal pickup) Staff will scan the barcode to charge the students account accordingly for Free, Reduced or Paid meals. (Parents can pick up meals for their students)

  • Staff will return inside to dish up the meal and take out to the vehicle.
