In The Classroom
This week our wetland journey continued as we made our way out of the swamp and into the saltwater marsh. I read the book A Day in the Salt Marsh by Kurtz to show the students the hourly changes in the marsh as the tide comes and goes. The children enjoyed the colorful illustrations, and all the rhyming words. To learn more about tides, I set up visual aides during group time. I used circles to represent the sun and moon. I used poster board pieces to illustrate the earth and the tidal bulge. I used my Phases of the Moon chart to show the children how the moon appears different as it orbits the earth. When the Sun, Moon, and Earth are aligned, I explained that the Moons gravitational pull causes a tidal bulge. I told the students that the Sun, Moon, Earth are in a line during the New Moon and Full Moon, and that creates a Spring Tide, and when the Sun and Moon are closer together, that's called Neap Tide. In order to help the preschoolers visualize high and low tide, I had a tray with water and pebbles, I tilted the tray to show them how the water levels change and cover the shoreline as the tides rise and fall.
