Class News
We are heading into our 2nd full week of school. If your kids are like mine, it is still challenging to get back into the school routine. Routines are an important part of your child's life. The first month of school is all about learning the classroom routines and expectations. I have found that when I take the time to really teach the students the routines and expectations, then the rest of the year we can really dig deep into learning. We are working on learning our Reading Daily 5. Kids are learning what to do during Read to Self, Work on Writing, and Word Work. We will be adding in Partner Reading and Listening to Reading (listening center) later. The Daily 5 are when your child is putting into practice all of the reading and writing skills we are learning in class. Once they know the routine and expectations for the Daily 5, I will start working with small groups. This week I will start reading one-on-one with students so I can get to know them better as a reader. A lot of beginning reading assessments take place in September and I will share all of this with you during our conference in October.
A Word About Homework.....
As I shared with you at the Curriculum Night, homework in first and second grade is mostly about the routine and habit of homework. I really believe it is important for us to help kids get into the habit of reading every night for at least 20 minutes. I like to slowly add in new homework components as we move along through the year. I have found it is not as overwhelming for kids and families. This week your child will bring home their first Fluency Folder. It will come home every Tuesday and needs to be returned on Thursday. I will include in the folder information for parents about fluency and how the folder works. You can include the reading done from the folder as part of your child's 20 minutes of reading. And don't forget that 20 minutes of reading at this point in the school year (especially for those beginning readers), can include parents reading to or with their child. I know that some kids are just learning to read or still working on their reading. The goal is to have them READ! It's a process and we are just getting started. In the next few weeks, we will start having spelling homework and then we will add in math fact fluency homework. In the mean time, enjoy reading together!
October Conferences
We have conferences scheduled October 14th, 15th, and 16th. Please return the Conference form with your top 3 choices. If you have other kids at Ridgecrest, let me know so I can coordinate with their classroom teacher. Once I get it organized I will put it all on a google doc and send that out.
The Ridgecrest Way
Ridgecrest Students are Respectful, Responsible, Kind, and Safe
We have been talking a lot about what these look like and sound like all around the school. Ask your child what they are doing at school to show the Ridgecrest Way!
