In The Classroom... 12/8/17
We have been working hard with written comprehension. We talked a lot about characters and their feelings along with understanding problem and solution within a story. We've evaluated different writings, learned how to score them with our RAP rubric and the kids are applying what they've learned into their own written responses. In your child's RED envelope you find his/her guided reading book. We spent the whole week reading, discussing and responding to questions about the book. Your child independently wrote a response to a written comprehension question. For homework this week, they should evaluate their response using the RAP rubric that is stapled. It's good practice for them to go back and review their writing to make sure they answered all parts of the book and it's good for you to see what's expected of your child. Your child does not have to rewrite his/her response, but instead have a conversation about it and make some comments on the rubric. Mclass assessments will begin on Monday and students reading a level F and higher will have to show their comprehension of the text through written responses. As soon as I have your child's assessments complete, I will share their data with you. I know the kids will do great.
In writing we are focusing on persuasive writing and how to writings. The kids wrote a persuasive writing this week on hamburgers vs. hotdogs. They did a really good job with this. Next week they will be writing a persuasive letter to Santa! During Work on Writing the kids are putting together How Tos. This week they wrote about how to brush your teeth. We will continue with this type of writing next week.
The kids are loving math and have developed a great understanding of place value and comparing numbers. Next week we will start working with adding 3 numbers (2 +3+ 7=).
Our Holidays Around the World Party is on Friday at 10:40. You are all invited to attend. We are asking that each family send in $3 to help cover the cost of materials for the crafts and decorations. In addition to this there is a sign up genius where you can also donate food items for the party. The link is below this section. Please consider donating some of these food items and don't forget to send in the $3 on Monday.
We finished traveling this week and the kids ROCKED their Social Studies projects. I am super proud of them. They were all so excited each day to see where our travels took us. It was an amazing journey. Project grades went home in Friday folders. Thanks for helping make this experience awesome!
Ask your child about our Skype on Friday. We visited the Wildlife Center of Virginia where we got to learn about how they help animals there and discovered information about snakes. We got to see two live snakes ( corn snake and hog nose snake). It was really cool!
Be sure to read the Notes section of the newsletter for important updates. Have a great Saturday.
