Science+Literacy=Better Together
A Two-Day Iowa Core Science Module 4 Workshop for 6-12
Attention Grade 6-12 Science Educators, Instructional Coaches & Administrators Who Support Them!
Science + Literacy = Better Together is a two-day workshop that focuses on the many ways
science and literacy support one another in secondary science classrooms. This module features the Science and Engineering Practices and provides multiple examples demonstrating how science and literacy standards can be achieved together.
During Day 1, participants will experience an immersion using a three-dimensional storyline featuring connections to life, earth and physical science concepts. Literacy strategies are modeled that support students figuring out applicable Disciplinary Core Ideas (DCI) with an emphasis on connecting the Science and Engineering Practices (SEP) and Crosscutting Concepts (CCC) much like how scientists work on their projects. This immersion could be implemented in biology and environmental science classrooms with an explicit connection to chemistry concepts. The strategies modeled can be implemented in any discipline.
Day 2 explores the connections to reading, writing, talking, and listening like a scientist and how we cultivate these characteristics in our secondary classrooms to meet both the Iowa Core Science and Literacy Standards for Science.
