SHISD Mid-Week Message
Promoting Great Things in a Great School District
Panther Signing Day!
Today is national signing day for college football. For many passionate sports fans across the country, today is like Christmas morning. So much excitement over who your favorite team has picked up and how hopeful they are for their favorite team's future success. For the student athlete, their parents, and their coaches, it is a proud moment symbolizing all of the hard work, sweat, and tears that have been put in over many years that finally culminate into one moment.
The moment is also an acknowledgement and promise of better things to come on a higher level. One side celebrates the current accomplishments, while the other side is hopeful for what the future potential might be. I have been fortunate in my career to share this exciting moment with many student athletes in every sport. I have also been fortunate to share in excitement of other scholarships whether music, dance, theater, academic and even a few military academy appointments.
Regardless of how you feel about sports and the amount of emphasis placed on it, signing day is an example of dreams coming true. To me that is what makes it special. It's not about the team or the college they will play for and represent. It's about the hard work, goal setting, and accomplishment of our student(s).
When I see students signing to play a college sport, I am also reminded of an old NCAA commercial that states, "there are over 400,000 NCAA student athletes, and just about all of us will be going pro in something other than sports." I hope today’s signings remind us to keep pushing our students to the next level and help them reach their potential so that when their signing day comes and it's their time to "turn pro", they look back at the educators that helped prepare them for the moment and know they will be successful. That is what College and Career Readiness should be about.
I would like to congratulate two Spring Hill Students signing to play college football today: Hagen Tucker signing today with Henderson State and Troy Duran signing today with Kilgore College. We are proud of your accomplishment and we wish you well!
KUDOS
- Just wanted to give a GREAT BIG SHOUT OUT to Mrs. Kathy Parker! She is Awesome!! She is truly dedicated to her students and staff! She includes my staff and I in planning of field trips and STAAR testing dates. The list goes on and on. She sincerely wants to make sure her students get a well rounded wholesome meal and the district does not lose reimbursement monies on those days they will be testing or gone on a field trip. Thank you Mrs. Parker for ALL YOU DO!! - Janet Albright
FAMILY UPDATES
- Garrett Plumlee had eye surgery on Monday. The surgery went well and family is hopeful this will improve his vision. Garrett is an example of courage and of positive attitude. I spoke with his mom last week and she mentioned how through this battle, he does not complain or get down. He has stayed positive. We are proud of you and continue to pray for full recovery. See the video below that was shown on Longview KETK Sunday and Monday.
- Coach Jordan Eudy was in a car wreck a couple of weeks ago and is recovering from a concussion. She should be back at full strength soon.
- Open Invitation from Tina Lee. I would like to extend an invitation on behalf of my middle son, Colin, and myself. He is a former Spring Hill student, and he will be performing in Shreveport, LA, on Feb. 5 at The Strand Theater. He is performing with a national tour theater group presenting Guys and Dolls. We would love for any former teacher, peer, or any others who enjoy theater to come out for a wonderful evening of singing, dancing, and comedy.

HS Students serve at the City of Longview Unity and Diversity Awards Ceremony
This last week, I was very proud to see three SHHS students Kase White, Kyrie Brown, and Katie Everett work and serve at the Longview Unity and Diversity Awards banquet. The event was very nice and it was good to meet some of the great people that have made a difference to the city. These three students learned a little about Longview's past, while having the opportunity to serve. Spring Hill ISD was also represented by Principal Lind.

Forever Friends Mentor Plant a Tree of Rememberance
Melissa passed away after a short battle with a fast, aggressive and very rare form of cancer. The forever friends and current mentors were in attendance for the tree planting.
Forever Friends is a volunteer mentor program through the City of Longview that meets with the girls once a week at lunch and mentors our students on relationships, boys, parents, dating, etc.
Teen Heart Screening
Longview Regional is promoting an opportunity for area teenagers. They had great success in 2014 reaching out to almost 200 kids in the area. In fact, 10% of those kids required additional consultation with a pediatric cardiologist based on their scans. It's important for parents to know that 1 in 250 students are at risk for sudden cardiac death related issues. Hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM) and most cardiac abnormalities cannot be detected with a routine sports physical. And to help avoid that this is what we are providing:
- FREE event to ANY teen ages 14-18
- Saturday, February 28 at Longview Regional Medical Center
- 8am - Noon *Each scan should take less that one hour to do.
- Parents must register their student online at www.champhearts.org
We want as many kids that can to come. Please help us spread the word on this opportunity. More info soon.
