Learning Walks - November 2!
- Posted learning targets (at TES, these are "I can" statements) in student friendly terms, that match the instruction
- Learning environment - Are there flexible learning spaces? Are student's social and emotional development being nurtured? Does the teacher model passion, care, and support? Are there respectful and positive relationships in this classroom? Are there student created displays, resources, and/or work? Do the routines and procedures support independent and collaborative work? Is the classroom neat and orderly? How is the student empowered to become self-directed and self-reliant?
- Student engagement - Can everyone answer what am I doing and why am I learning this? Do students share their goals for learning? Is the work rigorous enough for the student? Does the teacher provide feedback so that the student knows what they are doing well and what their next step should be to continue to master the learning target? How many times does the teacher need to redirect students? Who's doing the work - the teacher or the student?
We will keep you posted on what else they look for when visiting. Thank you putting students first in your decision making and continuing to be open to change!

R.E.D. Day
Virginia Beach City Public Schools (VBCPS) joins the Department of Defense, the DoDEA and the military community in celebrating November as Military Family Appreciation Month. We know behind our brave servicemen and women are our military children who are serving each day right alongside their loved ones. Through deployment, reintegration and frequent relocations, our military families are essential to protecting our nation’s freedom.
This year, everyone throughout VBCPS is invited to participate in R.E.D. Day – Remember Everyone Deployed by wearing red on Thursday, November 10th. By wearing red, VBCPS will demonstrate support for military families and their active duty loved ones and spread a message of recognition and appreciation for their service not just throughout Military Family Appreciation Month, but every day of the year.
VB Objectives Revision & Mathematics Curriculum Design Team
The Department of Teaching and Learning is seeking elementary mathematics teachers and mathematics specialists to serve as members of the Virginia Beach Objectives Revision and Mathematics Curriculum Design Team. The purpose of this team will be twofold: (1) to revise the current Virginia Beach Objectives (VBOs) to align with the 206 Mathematics Standards of Learning (SOLs), and (2) to review the current curriculum format and offer input for a design that can be utilized for the updated curriculum documents to be implemented in the 2018-2019 school year.
Trantwood is required to recommend one person for this team. Applicants should have knowledge of the current mathematics curriculum in the grade level for which they are applying, an understanding of how to incorporate the process standards in their instruction and the ability to collaborate with their peers. Please see Mrs. Kurz for a list of roles/responsibilities, an application form and a tentative timeline.
Personalized Learning
One focus area for school staff for 2016-2017 is to make use of resources, including professional learning opportunities, developed to build awareness around personalized learning, a critical component of Goal 2 of the strategic framework, Compass to 2020.
Personalized learning resources include the following:
· Virginia Beach Public Schools’ Personalized Learning Website – http://vbplearn.weebly.com
This site is continuously updated with resources, videos, and artifacts aligned with the VBCPS definition of Personalized Learning.
· Personalized Learning Overview and Introduction to Essential Components (Online) – This online course is running continuously through April 30, 2017. Participants receive three Professional Learning Program (PLP points for completion of the course.
· Wading into the Waters of Personalized and Blended Learning – This site-based course can be provided by each school’s instructional technology specialist.
· Design Fellows Tour – Tours of the classrooms of Design Fellows will be offered from January through March.
Congratulations Mrs. Piron! Trantwood's Reading Teacher of the Year!
Learning brings me joy!
