Tison Library Newsletter

Welcome Back!

It's been a restful summer, but I'm ready to get the school year started! I'm excited to get to know the new faces of Tison, and also welcome back the "seasoned" ones (sounded better than "old"). If you have a question, feel free to drop by the library or shoot me an email (lgreer@weatherfordisd.com).

Clubs in the Library

Tison Chess Club

The Tison Chess Club transformed itself over the 2013-2014 school year. We started the school year meeting during the Friday "club" period; however, competition with the numerous other clubs (ahem...ahem...Minecraft Club) turned our once strong chess club into a tiny version of itself. Plus, I kept hearing from former chess club members that they wished the chess club could meet at a different time. I listened to these students and created the Chess@Lunch Club. Now, any student who wishes to play chess can bring their lunch down to the library to eat and play chess all at the same time! Students who are interested in Chess@Lunch should consider recruiting a lunch friend who is interested in playing chess too.

Tison Anime Club

Asian comics and cartoons inspire a strong following of students - those students who love it....REALLY LOVE IT. I'm happy to provide a strong Manga collection for student check out, but these students really wanted a club in which to meet with those like themselves - anime/manga lovers!

The Tison Anime Club meets during the Friday club period - we generally watch various anime series/movies or read and discuss various manga collections (everything is kept to a rating of T (for Teen) or lower.

Tison Book Club

Uniting all those who are passionate about books and reading! The book club has generally met in the library during the lunch times. We will continue this for the first couple of meetings, but after that I'd like to take the club online with Edmodo. Edmodo provides a safe and easy way for our club to connect, collaborate, and share content. Listen to announcements in the fall for more information on how to join.

TMS Maker Club

The Tison Middle School Library is proud to provide the first "makerspace" for the school for the first time this school year!

To describe them simply, makerspaces are community centers with tools. These spaces can take the form of loosely-organized individuals sharing space and tools, for-profit companies, non-profit corporations, organizations affiliated with or hosted within schools, universities or libraries, and more. All are united in the purpose of providing access to equipment, community, and education, and all are unique in exactly how they are arranged to fit the purposes of the community they serve. (Info from www.makerspace.com)

The TMS Maker Club will combine the idea of a makerspace with an after-school program feel. Space will be limited so only those who are highly motivated to make things should participate. Not sure when the maker club will have its first session, but students interested in participating should check with the library.

TMS LIBRARY: Repeat Winner of a WISD Education Foundation Grant!

The WISD Education Foundation awarded the Tison Library (along with Crockett, Curtis, Hall, and Wright Libraries) the grant for "Medal of Honor" - giving us the opportunity to purchase award winning e-books. This grant was inspired by a post on a blog about a challenge started a few years ago called the "Newbery Medal Reading Challenge" (http://mrschureads.blogspot.com/2011/12/newbery-medal-challenge-1922-to-present.html) - but why limit to just Newbery??

Here's our challenge to you. Read a book that's won a Newbery, Caldecott, or any of the ALA awards (for a list of other awards go to http://www.ala.org/alsc/awardsgrants/bookmedia).

If it "spoke" to you, inspired you, or you just plain loved it - tweet about it using the #MOHreadingchallenge

Of course you can find many of these award-winning books at your school library!

Digital Resources in the Library

Ebooks & Digital Audiobooks

There are currently 356 e-books and 72 digital audiobooks available for Tison students and staff to check out and read on their smart phones and tablets. To download and read these books, you will need to download the free BryteWave K-12 app on your device (those students who previously had the Follett app, might already have the BryteWave K-12 app). The app works on a variety of tablets including Kindle Fire, iPad, and Samsung Galaxy. Stop by the library for more information on these books!

Texquest Databases

Thanks to restored funding from the 83rd State Legislature, the Texas State Library and Archives Commission (TSLAC) has re-established a statewide database program for K-12 public schools and open enrollment charter schools.

For the 2014-2015 school year, TSLAC has partnered with GALE and Adam Matthew Digital to bring high-quality resources for student research. More information about these databases to come...

Tison Library Online Catalog

The link takes you to the Destiny homepage for Tison Library. In order to search the library catalog, click on the tab called "catalog" and type what you are looking for in the search box. You can search by keyword, title, author, subject, or series. Over to the left, you also have the option of changing the page to Spanish or entering the FolletShelf (location for the ebooks).
