December Discussion Groups
This month, D34 ParentConnect discussion groups will focus on the connection between growth mindset and social-emotional health. You'll hear (and share your own) parenting moments that exemplify both fixed and growth mindset and leave with ideas on how to foster growth mindset in yourself and your children. Check the website for the schedule. and look for text and email reminders.
Parenting in the Era of Social Media
Mark your calendar for January 30, 2019, and plan to attend A “SnapChat” for Parents: Parenting Children & Adolescents in the Era of Social Media.
The Gift of Giving: Donate to The Debra Gelfand Fund
This fund was established in Debra’s memory. Money goes directly to help District 34 students in need; funds have helped students and their families receive shoes, food, clothing, glasses, medical assistance and so much more. The Debra Gelfand Fund relies on the donations of community members.
You can make donations of checks by mail to:
Debra Gelfand Fund | PO Box 368 | Glenview, IL 60025
You also can honor a teacher or friend this holiday season. Donation cards are available at each school to contribute to the fund in someone's honor or in memory. Stop by your school office or see your school social worker for a donation card.
5Essentials: Statewide Survey
- Effective Leaders
- Collaborative Teachers
- Involved Families
- Supportive Environments
- Ambitious Instruction
Research shows that schools strong on at least 3 of the 5Essentials are 10 times more likely to improve student outcomes. D34 will use the results of the survey to ensure that we provide the most effective environment for student growth, well-being and success.
D34 did not administer the 5Essentials Survey last year; we plan to use the results of this year's survey to give us a clear picture of our schools' climate and culture. Please click here or the button below to take the parent survey. We will be pleasantly persistent in the coming weeks as we hope to reach 100% participation before the survey closes on January 18, 2019.
Students in grades 4-8 also will be given the opportunity to take this survey. Per Board Policy 7:15, you have the right to review the survey questions and decide if you do not wish your child to participate. Click here to view the student questions. If you do not wish your child to take the survey, please email both Cathy Kedjidjian and your child's principal by December 15, 2018.

From GNCY: Talking to Your Child About Alcohol
It's never too early to talk about the effects of alcohol. These are great tips to get you started on the conversation with your kids:
Tip 1: Don’t let a bad conversation keep you down
Your tween is mastering the eye roll, but an emotional response isn’t always a bad thing; it means they’re listening.
Tip 2: Lead by Example
Kids in earshot? Have the conversation out loud about who’s driving home from a party and how you plan to make good decisions.
Tip 3: Explain
Parents, studies show that you are the leading influence on your kid’s decision to drink, or not to drink, alcohol. It’s important to explain to your kids why adults can drink alcohol, and kids can’t.
Tip 4: Get excited, get ahead
Conversations about things like alcohol should happen early and often.
