NLMUSD CV-19 Grading Policy
Email Sent: April 24, 2020
Dear NLMUSD Community,
As a reminder, all our schools will remain closed through the end of the 2019-2020 school year. This decision is in alignment with all public school districts in Los Angeles County. Considering this pandemic and the limitations associated with distance learning, after consultation with our principals, teachers’ union, instructional leads, and district administration, we have decided to transition all secondary students to credit/no credit grading for the second semester of 2019-2020. In fact, we just agreed to Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with our teachers’ union regarding this temporary grading policy. We plan to take this resolution to the Board of Education on May 4th.
Moving to credit/no credit grading will benefit our students without negative consequences for students during these unprecedented times. In addition, Public Universities in California and many throughout the country have made it clear that students will not be penalized for missing traditional standardized tests or for posting credit/no credit transcripts for this semester. This change in policy will be temporary only until students and faculty return to school in the Fall of 2020 or later. However, any secondary students who are interested in submitting a petition to receive letter grades, must submit their request no later than Friday, May 22nd. Information regarding site specific procedures will be posted to your child’s school website in the coming weeks.
On the other hand, Elementary students will not receive marks in the General Learner Outcomes (GLOs) or formal grades in the Academic section for Trimester 3. They will only receive personalized comments from their teachers. Every report card will also include a general statement explaining why students did not receive formal grades for Trimester 3.
On behalf of the Board of Education, please accept my sincere appreciation for your support and patience during these trying times. Let’s stay safe, positive, and connected.
Sincerely, Hasmik Danielian,
Ed.D. Superintendent
