An Update from Perkiomen Valley Middle School West
A Word From Mr. Creeden
As we approach Memorial Day Weekend we honor the U.S. military personnel who have died while serving in the United States Armed Forces. I hope you have a great weekend of remembrance as you gather with family and/or friends.
In other news, as we conclude Mental Health Awareness Month, the PV West CAUSE (Connecting And Uniting Students to Empower) club is having their final meeting of the school year next Wednesday May 31st, and they would like any student who is interested to join them. The club will be making hearts for the Peyton Heart Project. The Peyton Heart Project was inspired by several stories including that of a 13-year-old boy named Peyton James who died by suicide in 2014.
The delicate hearts, each one made by hand and each one representing the delicate heart of a life lost to suicide, have various inspiring quotes attached to them, along with our social media information. We hope the hearts cause people to stop for a moment and reflect on a life lost to suicide, on bullying and on the fact that everyone’s life matters. We want to leave people with a feeling that there is still good out there in the world and we would like to inspire others to join us on this mission of kindness. For more information on the Peyton Heart Project or to donate, go to thepeytonheartproject.org.
If your child is interested in joining the CAUSE club to make these delicate hearts and spread this message of kindness they may come to the Library after school on Wednesday May 31st. Students attending must arrange for transportation home as there will not be a late bus.

What's Up @ West
Math GamesTitle One math teacher, Jim Stranix proctored an exciting activity with Mrs McCloskey's sixth grade math students this past Monday in the library. With the help of a dozen or so carefully selected eighth grade volunteers, the students practiced their math skills playing card games using Everyday Math cards. The young mathematicians and the card dealers had a great time while the dealers seized the teachable moments sharing their mental math tips and thought processes with the sixth graders. | Special Olympics"Let me win, but if I cannot win, let me be brave in the attempt.” Four of our best West athletes traveled to Spring-Ford High School on May 24th to compete in the Montgomery County Special Olympics Track and Field Competition. Select students from every school in our district enjoyed a day filled with fun, games, and sunshine! According to the Special Olympics Pennsylvania website, “The mission of Special Olympics PA is to provide year-round sports training and competition in a variety of Olympic-type sports for children and adults with intellectual disabilities, giving them continuing opportunities to develop physical fitness, demonstrate courage, experience joy, and participate in a sharing of gifts, skills, and friendship with their families, other Special Olympics athletes, and the community.” Congratulations to our amazing West Olympians! | Spring Choral ConcertThe West auditorium was filled with the angelic voices of the PVMS West Choir during the annual Spring Choral Concert on Thursday, May 25th. The evening began with the sixth grade chorus’ lovely rendition of "Bonse Aba." After two more selections, the seventh grade choir took the stage singing "My Shot," featuring soloists Mia Thornton, Abigail White, Andrew Colvin, and Shamiso Mpofu. They were followed by the eighth grade choir jazzing up the crowd with the feisty Kenyan pop song "Jambo." The Select Choir offered three selections including "Amazing Grace" with soloists Noah Kenny and Helene Saboe-Moore. Congratulations to Mr. Sands and the members of the West Choir for an outstanding performance! |

End of Year Medication Pick Up
Please remember to obtain your child’s medication from the nurse’s office no later than student dismissal time on June 9, 2023. As per the PVSD Medication Procedure, students are not permitted to carry their own medication. Any unclaimed medication will be destroyed after dismissal. Please contact your child's school nurse if you have any questions.
PV Middle School Procedure Reminders
Cell Phones/Personal DevicesStudents should, whenever possible, communicate with their parents before and after school and arrange their schedules so the school day is not unnecessarily interrupted with phone calls. Only emergency messages will be taken by the office. Cell phone usage is prohibited from 7:40 AM-2:30 PM. All cell phones need to be turned off and stored in the student’s locker or backpack. If a student needs to contact their parent/guardian for emergency purposes, they will be permitted to use the office phone. Violation of this policy will result in disciplinary action. | Procedure for Administration of Medications in SchoolDespite medications being prescribed or helpful for students, the major responsibility for specific medications belongs to the student’s parents. On occasion, a student may require a specific medication during the school day. In order to provide proper care and protection for all students, the following method of administering medicine in school shall be followed: 1. All medications (prescription, and over-the-counter medications) administered at school require written permission of both the student’s physician and parent. The Medication Permission Form is available in the Quick Reference Guide below or on both the district and individual school building websites. Permission slips must be completed each school year. 2. No medication should be in the student’s possession (pockets, lunch, purse/handbag, or backpack). All medications are to be delivered directly to the nurse’s office and kept in the health room unless otherwise designated by the school nurse. | Student Responsibility & Care of ChromebooksPerkiomen Valley School District strives to create an environment where every learner has the power to meet the challenges of today’s world with confidence. Chromebooks support this environment in many ways. These devices break down classroom walls and provide both educators and students with the ability to access more educational resources than ever before. Chromebooks encourage collaboration and allow learning opportunities to be anywhere at any time. This tool will permit teachers to utilize mobile and social technologies in their everyday instruction, encouraging a habit of lifelong learning in their students, and continue to meet the ever-changing challenges of college and career readiness.

Tween Talk Group
Tweens, ages 11 to 13, are invited to chat in a fun, informal atmosphere with Erin McMonagle, a guidance counselor at Perkiomen Valley East Middle School - as part of our Julia’s Joy Youth Empowerment Program. We have created a safe group, where they can come relax, unload and learn they are not alone all while meeting new friends. We believe learning Stress Management tips will help youth deal with the pressures they are feeling at this age and into the future!
This group is free thanks to donations, if you would like to make a donation, it is always appreciated, but not necessary!
Learn more about our workshops and our mission at http://www.JuliasJoy.org
Be Part of the Conversation - Upcoming Programs
We are a collaboration of community leaders, clinicians, students, school district representatives, and families who believe that having meaningful, inclusive conversations about substance use and addiction will support individuals and their families in their efforts to develop healthy coping skills and access support whenever there is a need. Learn more about us. See the link below for a number of programs that Be a Part of the Conversation offers.
