Ecological Succession
Group 1
Ecological succession
When the environment structure changes over time
Primary succession
Occurs when rock is uncovered and organisms begin to grow on this land
Slow process because soil is not present in the beginning
Small organisms begin to grow on the rock, like mosses and lichen
When they die, they create soil so that large plants can grow
Diversity begins to increase
Secondary succession
Occurs when am excisting ecosystem is destroyed
This could occur because of a fire, flood, or hurricane
Soil is present so process does not take as long as primary succession
