East Troy High School Newsletter

April 2019

Principals Notes

April 1st brings the arrival of the 4th quarter, and that is not an April Fools' joke! This year, we have focused on incorporating mental health awareness and care into our universal approaches. As we continue on our journey, we are looking to add Wellness Wednesdays to the school day during Resource period. Students will have the option to sign up for wellness activities during resource. Some activities may require a permission slip. Some of the activities we are looking to incorporate are yoga, walking, organized intramural sports, and others based on student interest.

As the school year starts to rev up for the end of the year, we want to share some discussions that we've been having at the high school regarding final exams. While some classes may have final exams, the assessment practices in education are changing from focusing on a large test being the primary data point towards a grade to utilizing a collection of evidence to represent the grade. Therefore, during the last week and days of school students might be uploading their work to a portfolio or defending their learning in a expo-style environment.

As reminder, the last day of class for Seniors is May 30th, with all other high school students ending on June 6th, 2019. There are no team dates for the remainder of the year.

Academic Check Form

Continuing this week, and at every grade check, there will be an Academic Check Form that students that have more than one failing grade will need to complete and submit to their principal. Students with more than 1 F will receive the form and will need to submit the form to their principal by Friday at 3:10 PM. If the student no longer has any failing grades, they are dismissed from the check-ins. If the student completes the form but still has a F(s) they will remain in the program. If the student does not complete the form they will be in noon detention until the form is submitted. Please reach out to your child's principal with any questions.

Barbershop Super Sing

Ten students from East Troy Middle and High School participated in the Barbershop Super Sing held in West Allis on Saturday, March 30th. The students impressed the clinicians, professional barbershop quartets, and the members of the local barbershop society that was hosting the event. Aimee Swanson, the choir director, continued to hear comments of how polite, kind, energetic, and musical the students were. Students were able to work with gold medal winning clinicians and professional groups. They learned music before arriving, then put it together with all the participating students. The professional barbershop quartets helped lead sectionals, talked about the structure of barbershop, and inspired students with outstanding performances. Mrs. Swanson and the students had an AMAZING time!

71 minutes per class

3rd Trimester

5 academic classes per day

Band and Choir

Students will have the opportunity to enroll in both band and choir during the same academic class period, if they choose. Students could also take band and choir during separate class periods, if they'd prefer. As with all course offerings and programming, ETHS values the music department and has devoted much time and effort towards ensuring high quality programming and opportunities in music exist in the trimester.

Length of an Academic Term

In a trimester schedule, the school year is divided into three terms or trimesters. Each trimester is about 60 days of instruction. The students will receive final grades in their classes three times each year: end-Nov, mid-March, and in June.

Number of Classes Per Day

East Troy High School’s trimester schedule will allow students to focus on up to five classes per day (and still have a Resource period). This means the day will be divided into five classes, with each class meeting for approximately 71 minutes.

Opportunity to Enroll in Courses

In the East Troy High School trimester schedule, students will have three terms, each of those can include up to five classes per day. Therefore, a student can enroll in up to 15 classes in a given school year.

Length of the School Year

The East Troy Community School District Board will not tolerate any form of bullying, harassment, or hazing, such as the use of verbal comments, written comments, graphic materials, cyber bullying, or indirect behaviors.

  • Conflict: A struggle between two or more people who perceive they have incompatible (opposite/conflicting) goals. Conflict is a normal part of life, and it occurs because people of the same relative power see the same situation in two different perspectives.

  • Bullying: Bullying is deliberate or intentional behavior using words or actions, intended to cause fear, intimidation or harm. Bullying may be repeated behavior and involves an imbalance of power.

  • Harassment: Harassment is behavior towards students based in whole or part on sex, race, color, religion, national origin, ancestry, creed, pregnancy, marital or parental status, sexual orientation, homeless status or handicap, physical, mental, emotional, or learning disability which substantially interferes with a students’ school performance or creates an intimidating, hostile or offensive school environment.

  • Hazing: Hazing is intentionally or recklessly engaging in acts which endanger the physical health or safety of a student for the purpose of initiation or admission into an affiliation with any organization or group.

The East Troy Community School District works with the SafeSchools Alert reporting system. This system allows students/parents access to report any safety or bullying concerns and also gives students/parents the opportunity to give a shoutout or kudos when a good job is done! All of the reporting can be done completely anonymously through the website.

Students/parents can access the SafeSchools Alert reporting system through the district's website. The link is located on the right hand side, under “quick links” labeled “report a concern” or click below.

Trojan Athletics

Winter Sports has wrapped up and spring sports are under way. The girls and boys basketball seasons came to an end during regional play. The girls fell to Union Grove while the boys fell to eventual State Qualifier, Elkhorn. The Cheer and Dance team also ended their season with a bang. The team represented East Troy down in Florida for Nationals, and also at the state tournament in La Crosse. Congrats to all of the winter athletes that represented East Troy in a positive manner!

Despite Mother Nature's best attempt at raining out and flooding our fields, our spring sports are outside and fortunately have not caused any cancellations. Our soccer, softball and baseball fields are in good shape thanks to our building and grounds workers, and the teams are off to a good start! The track team will be getting under way with their first outdoor meet and tennis and golf will be starting competition soon. It is still early in the season, but the outlook is promising for the East Troy Trojans! Best of luck to all athletes this spring!

Spring Sports

Spring sports have begun. If you are interested in playing a spring sport please see Mr. Oldenburg or Mrs. Harding, in the main office.

Spring Sports include: Baseball, Softball, Girls Soccer, Boys Tennis, Boys Golf and Co-Ed Track and Field
