Chapter 13.9 Suburban Sprawl

Retailing as well as housing has grown in suburbs.

The Peripheral Model

North American urban areas follow the peripheral model. According to the peripheral model, an urban area consists of a city surrounded by large suburban residential and business areas tied together by a beltway or ring road.

Attractions of suburbs

In polls, more than 90 percent of responders prefer the suburbs to the inner city. Suburbs offer many things, such as single-family houses rather than apartments, protection from crime, and proximity to good schools.
