A weekly update from Carleton Middle School
An Update from our School Improvement Team
Over the first few weeks of school our School Improvement Team decided upon our Building Goal in order to challenge ourselves as professionals but more importantly challenge our students in the effort to achieve more every day!
Here is the first component of our Building Goal: In order to help students develop understanding, staff will implement Classroom Instruction that Works (CITW) strategies minimally once per week. These strategies include number talks, language acquisition strategies, and accommodated instruction. This will work to improve students' reading scores across all subgroups, as measured by the 2017-2018 NWEA assessment.
There are many other components of school improvement, district improvement, and personal growth goals but I wanted to take a moment to share with you one of the areas we are focusing on regarding teaching and learning. Lastly, below are a few more highlights of who we are and what we stand for as a learning community.
Mission
The mission of Carleton Middle School is to value the individual and celebrate learning.
Vision
Carleton Middle School is a caring and confident community committed to excellence.
If we want to build a school with a collaborative culture, we must...
-Be committed to working with one another.
-Consistently communicate with one another in a professional manner.
-Presume positive intentions.
If we want to build a school with a culture of high expectations for students and staff, we must...
-Make our expectations clear.
-Consistently hold students and ourselves accountable to meet our expectations.
-Model appropriate behavior for students and for one another.
If we want to build a school which produces caring, confident and committed students, we must...
-Focus on student learning.
-Develop and maintain high quality relationships with our students and colleagues.
-Provide multiple opportunities for students to demonstrate their learning.
-Provide interventions for students who need extra help or an extra challenge.
-Maintain a safe learning environment for all students and staff.

Clark's Corner
On Thursday I spent some time walking around our halls, and classrooms. I am pleased to say there were very few students in the halls, and a lot of interesting and exciting things going on in our classrooms. I want to take a minute to share some of what I saw today so that when you ask your son or daughter what they did in school when they say "nothing". Today in class our teachers:
-Had students writing interviews based on research about monsters and other Halloween themed characters
-Discussed story structure
-Added negative integers
-Conducted an experiment identifying mineral properties in rocks
-Discussed author's organizing information in a sequence of events
-Did vocabulary builders
-Had an impromptu discussion on the effects of poaching on animal populations
-Spent time reading to our students
-Gave our students time to read
-Discussed the importance of trade in ancient civilizations
As a parent I am happy to know that our children have an opportunity to participate in these activities during a very busy week.
Is that a heterogeneous mixture I see?
