Auschwitz
The largest death camp
Introduction
Auschwitz is the largest death camp. Auschwitz was divided into three camps. There was Auschwitz 1, and Auschwitz 2 which were called Birkenau. It was considered as a killing center. Auschwitz 3 was called Buna or Monowitz. It had its own hospital infirmary for sick prisoners, but the medication usually given to them caused them to die.
Gas Chambers
In Auschwitz, there were many gas chambers. When prisoners first arrive, they were forced to go into the "showers", which were actually gas chambers. The doors and windows were shut, gas was pumped and it didn't take long to reach death. Jewish workers were forced to remove the remaining corpse and throw the bodies in to the burning oven where the bodies were burned to ashes.
Living Conditions
Auschwitz had leaky roofs, dirty straw mattresses, and rats. Prisoners slept on old brick or wooden barracks and also usually had 1300 to 1700 calories a day. The lack of food caused some to experience organic malnutrition. If it was extreme it would lead to death.
Death March
When Germany was losing they ordered for all the prisoners to march to Germany. There were 55,000 who were forced to march. If they fell along the way, they would be shot in the head. When they stopped, they had to sleep in tunnels. Some suffocated from lack of air and thousands died.
