Peru Intermediate Book Buzz December 2019

Book Buzz

BOOK BUZZ is a Peru Intermediate video series designed so students can create READING RAINBOW style book reviews and recommendations. Students select and read books that excel in both illustrations and/or story content. After reading the book they may submit a book review via our Google Forms submission link below. Deadlines for reviews fall in the middle of each month (about the 15th). Submissions will be evaluated and selected to be presented in video format, based on the following criteria:

1. The book excels in illustrations or story content.

2. Summaries are well written and incorporate the key elements of writing summaries.

3. BOOK BUZZ books should show viewers that reading can be a pleasurable and rewarding experience.

GOALS:
The goals of BOOK BUZZ are:

  • To celebrate and encourage the pleasure of reading by familiarizing them with outstanding children's literature.
  • To motivate students to appreciate literature and seek out good books which are recommended by peers.

We encourage all of our families to work with their child to submit a book review using the submission form button below!

Creating a Culture of Reading

Creating a culture of reading is important to the success of our elementary students which is why it is one of our building goals this school year. We are focused on working with each child to ignite a love and passion for reading. As a faculty and staff, we are proud of the key actions we have identified to help build this culture within our school. Some of the creative and fun ideas that are in process right now include:

  • our "Reading Rainbow" type book review, Book Buzz;
  • our Art and Literacy Night with 3rd Graders;
  • a focus on giving students choice at daily SSR time within each grade level;
  • monthly book tastings in the library.

We will continue to share this great work that our students are doing with reading as they unfold throughout the year.

The Studio Gets a Makeover!

The Studio, an enhancement rolled out to faculty and staff last year, recently received a fresh new makeover thanks to Mrs. Osborne and a group of volunteers. Simply named, but sophisticated in all that it offers, The Studio is a learning space to create, engage, and energize our students. From a 3D printer, to 3D pens, robotics, VR headsets, Breakout EDU kits, Bloxels, Maki-maki, and more, The Studio is a resource that students will benefit from for years to come. The Studio also happens to be home base for our student run news station, PE-TV.

Positive School Environment Team

Our Positive School Environment Team, PSET, has been very busy this school year organizing events and opportunities to help create a positive school climate at Peru and teach life long lessons along the way.

As a way for students to learn the importance of the strength of Gratitude, we have organized grade level service projects taking place over the month of December.

  • 3rd grade is collecting toy donations for local families;
  • 4th grade is doing a food advent collection for area food shelves;
  • 5th grade is collecting supplies for Elmore SPCA.

Thank you families for your support of our students, school and community!

Our Peru Pride Brigade, 5th grade student leader volunteers, have been busy with our #KindnessCampaign by creating Kindness Bingo cards and doing random acts of kindness throughout our school. They then gave a presentation at last month's Peru Pride Assembly on it!

Below, you will find two videos from our Peru Pride Assembly in November on the strength of Gratitude. Peru Pride starts here!
