STEPS Summer Camp for Girls

Grand Valley State University is offering a Science Technology & Engineering camp for 6th grade girls this summers. STEPS (Science, Technology & Engineering Preview Summer Camp) is an all-girl day camp introduction to the world of science, technology and engineering. Campers participate in activities that give them hands-on experience with high-tech engineering equipment and processes. STEPS is an opportunity for girls to learn more about what engineers do in an informal, non-threatening, and fun environment. Program activities include designing, manufacturing, and flying a radio-controlled airplane. Students will also explore science and engineering topics while learning team building and other social skills. Participants will tour Grand Valley's engineering facilities and see several manufacturing processes. The cost for the full week of camp is $75. Scholarships are available. For more information, please visit http://www.gvsu.edu/steps. There you will find a printable brochure, applications, sample schedule, parent and camper testimonials and pictures. Space is limited. Applications are due to GVSU by March 11th.

Scheduling for 2016-17 Freshmen Has Begun!

It's hard to believe, but it won't be long and we will be saying farewell to our 8th graders and hello to them as freshmen! OHS Guidance Counselor, Mrs. Wrenfrow, and OMS Guidance Counselor, Mr. Fuller, guided our 8th graders this week on class selection for their freshmen year! Be on the look out for a yellow scheduling slip (pictured above). Some students will bring them home on Friday others this Monday. All schedules need to be returned by Wed., Feb. 10th with a parent signature. Should you have any questions about the scheduling process, please feel free to contact Mr. Fuller at kfuller@otsegops.org or by phone at 692-6199.

Congratulations to our Encouragers!

OMS Students began their focus on encouraging others this week. Throughout the month of February, Mr. Fuller will focus his guidance lessons on this trait. Each time staff members see students who are "Encouraging Others", pink tickets will be handed out. Five lucky winners are drawn each week. Congratulations to the following students who were lucky enough to have their name drawn: Noah McHenry, Aurora Pigeon-Dolnk, Ben Bickel, Dylan LaDuke, & Avery Henkel. They each received a ticket for a free item in the a la carte line. Keep up the great work!!

Building & Site Sinking Fund Information

Otsego Public Schools is fortunate to have wonderful facilities that represent a great source of pride in the Otsego community; our facilities are used by groups across the region. Much of that is due to the voters' generosity passing a bond in 2004. Otsego was able to build a new, state-of-the-art high school, new athletic facilities and make significant upgrades to our other school buildings. It is important to us to maintain the pristine condition of those facilities, maintain that pride and continue to be a resource for organizations, fine arts groups and athletic associations. There are needed upgrades and repairs that did not fall into the 2004 bond projects that the district would like to address sooner, rather than later, so we can keep expenses down.

The repairs fall into three categories:

  1. Safety & Security
  2. Energy Efficiencies & Upgrades
  3. Site Improvements/Maintenance

We are looking at a Building and Site Sinking Fund to provide the financial resources we need without taking away funds from the classroom. Below, you will find several pieces of information related to this proposal.

We need YOU to help us with the 8th grade field trip to the Allegan County Area Technical Education Center (ACATEC) on March 2nd & 3rd! If you would like to join us and experience first-hand the over two dozen different career development programs and opportunities at ACATEC, consider chaperoning with us! No group will be larger than 15 students, and all groups are assigned an ACATEC docent guide that leads each tour. We will gather at 8:15, be at ACATEC by 9:00, tour until 10:30, and you will be back at school and on your way by 11:00 (keep in mind both days are 1/2 days for students). Join us for this educational experience that is great information for both students AND parents! Contact our school counselor, Keith Fuller, at 692-6199 or kfuller@otsegops.org.
