INSTRUCT ME IN YOUR WAYS
Psalms 32:8 I will instruct you and teach you in the way you should go; I will counsel you and watch over you.
Thirty-two students filed in to my third period English class. They were talkative and preoccupied as they took their seats. One young lady toward the back of the class continued to be distracted even after I called the class to order and the other students were on task. I asked her to settle down. In response, she retorted some crude and disrespectful statement. I was shocked. Immediately I told her, “You need to see me after class!” She nodded her head and became quiet. I continued with my lessons and the incident was temporarily dropped.
After class, she approached my desk. I was prepared to “let her have it” with a lecture on respect plus assign her consequences that would teach her to never talk to me that way again. But, as she came toward me, the Holy Spirit spoke in that still small voice saying, “Love her. She’s hurting. Don’t be harsh with her.” I instantly changed my approach.
“Honey, what’s wrong? That’s not like you? What happened?” I asked. She burst into tears and began to explain how she had experienced major humiliation in the class just before mine. She was upset when she came into my classroom, and she took her frustration out on me. She tearfully apologized. She let me know how much she liked me as a teacher, and how she felt bad that she said the things she did. I patted her arm and assured her that I understood. We discussed her embarrassing incident, and I was able to give her some counsel and pray with her.
I never had another disrespectful word from her. Had I not listened to that small “inner” voice of God that was instructing me for that situation, I could have built a wall between us for the entire year. Instead, I was able to love her to correction and help her deal with a difficult experience. Learn to listen carefully. It may transform your relationship with a student as you allow Christ to love them through you.
Dear God, Thank you for your faithfulness and your instruction. You care about my day and you have promised to lead me if I will listen, watch and follow.
Learning Language, Learning Through Language, Learning About Language
- Language is best learned through meaningful use in a variety of contexts, and the curriculum is an ideal and ready-made resource for a focus on language for learning.
- Concurrent teaching of language and content allows ESL students to continue learning as they are developing their second language.
- The "language-rich diet" of ESL teaching is of benefit to all students: it supports all children to use language in ways that are new and critical to academic learning.
Reading to Learn in the Content Areas- Chapter 9
- Use one of the strategies below to explore Chapter 9.
- You will have 45 minutes to complete your chart.
- Be prepared to share with a partner.
Study Skills Strategies
- Beginning on p. 266, explore additional study skills strategies.
- Describe several activities that lead students to effective study behaviors.
- Identify ways to incorporate technology with study skills activities.
- Share with the group how you might incorporate these strategies in your own teaching/learning.
- Explain the importance of developing students' ability to use study skills at all grade levels.

STUDENT RESOURCE GUIDE: (60 total points)- DUE OCTOBER 26th
Compose a step-by-step guide that will enable ESL students to evaluate and use technological and research resources to meet their own academic needs. This activity is intended to support English language learners in developing their independent study and research skills.
- Be creative in your approach to this. You might create a web site, a prezi (prezi.com), or construct a guide in a word document with “print screen” images or other visuals so you are able to walk students through navigating digital resources in a way that provides comprehensible input, supporting them as they study on their own. You might create a youtube video where you record your voice while modeling for students on your computer screen how to navigate different electronic resources as a part of their study habits or projects.
- Ask yourself, “How will my guide help students to navigate, evaluate, and make the best use of technological and research resources as they study a particular content area?”
- Post a copy of your guide on Blackboard. Include a paragraph of reflection on how to use your guide and a rationale for why it could be used effectively with ELLs in the content areas.
