Author Study: Paula Danziger

Paula Danziger was born on August 18, 1944 in Washington DC. She grew up in New Jersey and graduated from Montclair State University, earning a bachelor's degree. Danziger became a teacher and taught junior high, high school and college. She received her Master's Degree in reading and that is when she wrote, My Cat Ate My Gymsuit, her first children's book. The book was published in 1974 and she became a full time writer. She does not have a lot of free time but when she does Paula likes to read, be wither her friends and scrapbook. Her favorite color is purple and she also loved to travel.


Paula gets her ideas by her experiences or if she had trouble coming up with ideas she would go into classes, talk to kids or play-act in her head. Paula is not working on any new stories since she unfortunately passed away July 8, 2004. In a scholastic interview, Paula gives advice to young writers, "Remember in the book Harriet the Spy how Harriet was told that to be a good writer you have to be a spy? I think that's true. Listen, watch, and imagine, and don't get so nervous about it."

Bruce Coville and Elizabeth Levy are authors and they are special guests in this tribute interview to Paula Danziger. They talk about how they met her and what kind of person she is. Also, Danziger's nice, Carrie. Carrie talks about how, "Paula loved to shop and loved people and letting them know that they matter. Connecting us all together so even without Paula here, were still all family together." Amber Brown is also based on Carrie.

The novels are general fiction children's books. She has not illustrated any of her books.

The targeted audience for Paula Danziger is children grades 4-8 (pre-pre-adolesence)

Analysis of Author's Craft:

Paula Danziger wrote over 30 children's books. Danziger was also the recipient of numerous literally awards, including the Children's Choice Award from the International Reading Association and the 2003 Garden State Children's Book Award.


In her book series P.S. Longer Letter Later and Snail Mail No More, the themes of the books are adolescent issues, changes and new experiences, divorce, friendship. The Amber Brown series is also well known and the themes are feelings and emotions, growing up, divorce, pride and self-esteem.


The books I have read/brought in by Paula Danziger are, P.S Longer Letter Later, Snail Mail No More, and her first published book My Cat Ate My Gymsuit. For two book I just listed, the style goes together. Snail Mail No More is the sequel to P.S. Longer Letter Later. P.S Longer Letter Later, is in the form of letters written by two best friends that use mail as a form of communication. Snail Mail No More, is the same two best friends communicating but this time by emails. The book is written in a series of emails by the two best friends. In the book My Cat Ate My Gymsuit, is written in normal chapter book form.

Curriculum Connections:

Paula Danziger does not have an official author website or any spin off movies from the books she has written. Also, there aren't any apps or games that provide extension opportunities about Paula Danziger. However, her books are available in kindle (E-Book) form. The website, Scholastic.com has a great interview script with Paula and it is very informational about her life an career.
