Welcome Back!
I hope that everyone had a great time with family over our brief break and got to relax a bit. We have 15 school days until Winter Break and I'd like for us to end this semester as strong as we began it. Although we plan to have a lot of fun this month but we also need to remind our students of the classroom and school-wide expectations. We also need to use our consequence ladders so that we hold students accountable.
Supervision:
- Threshold during transitions and if you are talking to a student or adult, frequently scan your classroom and the hallway.
- Lead from the middle of the line so that you can see all of your students.
- Don't sit behind your desk for extended periods of time (use proximity, your presence stops foolishness).
- If you are working with a student or a group of students, look up frequently to be seen looking.
No WDM This Week
The MOY NWEA begins today:
12/2-12/3: ELA (Reading only) Testing. Teachers will conduct all make-up tests in class on 12/4-12/6. Note: Teachers will only give the Reading test this session; no Language Arts testing is required.
12/9-12/10: Math Testing. Teachers will conduct all make-up tests during class on 12/11-12/13.
After the two designated test days please move forward with instruction while students are working on their make-ups.
Please ensure all students have taken both tests by EOD 12/13.
Discovering us so that we can see them clearly
- Please, never say, "Get out of my class." For one, we are adults and should not return negative behavior to children or adolescence. Two, it communicates that you are mad or irritated and the students know that they can push your buttons. Quietly direct students to a timeout room and use the minor behavior tracker. Never send students to the office.
- When you feel yourself beginning to get irritated, take a few deep breaths, drink some water and walk around the room. If your amygdala takes over because of anger or fear, you will lose your ability to empathize and increase the chances of you saying or doing something that you cannot unsay or undo. Breath and movement activates your prefrontal cortex which releases a neurotransmitter called GABA that calms the lower limbic agitation.
Second Step Instruction
Second Step Curriculum should be taking place at least 3 days per week during Core Connect. Most lessons might take 2 days. There are extension materials within the curriculum that should be utilized any time you are looking for added content related to the week's material.
Steps to follow for grades 6, 7, and 8 to access extension material:
- Click PREP rather than START next to the lesson for the week.
- From the PREP screen, you can access the lesson plan, and a student handout if desired.
- Scroll all the way down on the PREP screen to access the section entitled, "Want to Extend the Lesson?" and you can access multiple links/activities to supplement the week's material.
THIS WEEK, YOU SHOULD BE INSTRUCTING LESSON 11 - this applies to all grade levels.
If you are far ahead of Lesson 11, I ask that you stop instruction of new content, go back and utilize the extension materials for previous lessons. It is imperative that we are on pace with the Second Step guidance and district calendar.

Fight the Flu!
LET'S FIGHT THE FLU TOGETHER
Your decision to get a flu shot or not goes well beyond you. It also affects the many lives you touch...
Influenza ia a contagious disease of the respiratory tract (nose, throat, and lungs) that can lead to serious complications, including pneumonia and the worsening of other chronic health conditions. Flu symptoms may include fever, headache, extreme tiredness, dry cough, sore throat, runny or stuffy nose, and muscle aches. The best way to protect your family from new influenza strains is to get vaccinated each year.
Please stay healthy during the coming Holiday Season by using good handwashing techniques and keeping the following areas germ free in your home:
1) Telephones (have you cleaned your cell phone lately?)
2) Appliances such as a refrigerator and microwave.
3) Faucets
4) Light switches and door handles.
5) TV remotes
Enjoy a Happy and Healthy Holiday season!!!
Thank you,
Sharon Larpenter R.N.

Literacy
Team, after Winter Break we will be adding a literacy component to our week. On Monday's during core connect students will read high interest books. On Fridays, we will be writing using the R.A.C.E strategy to answer writing prompts. For those who are unfamiliar, the RACE format prepares students to answer short and extended response prompts. It asks students to Restate, Answer, Cite evidence, and Explain their answer. There will be a couple of work shops on the RACE strategy before we begin.
