Science Teacher Award Opportunities (via NSTA)
Nominate yourself, a colleague, or a student for one of the many awards sponsored through NSTA. The annual NSTA Awards and Recognition Program recognizes exceptional and innovative science educators and students. The NSTA Awards and Recognition were created in 1973 to raise awareness and exposure of the outstanding work being done in the science education field.
All entries must be received by 11:59PM EST on 12/15/2016, via online submission, with the exception of the Shell Science Teaching Award, whose deadline is 1/06/2017. Entry fees are free.
A distinguished panel of professional science educators will gather the weekend of 1/16/2017 to select the winners from an anticipated 500 entries. To be eligible for consideration, all work must be current and cumulative as applicable.
The NSTA Awards and Recognition recipients will be honored during a black-tie dinner gala on 3/31/2017 in Los Angeles, California, at the NSTA National Conference on Science Education.
The NSTA Awards and Recognition Program is sponsored in part by Bio-Rad, DuPont/Pioneer, Northrop Grumman Foundation, PASCO, SeaWorld Parks and Entertainment, Shell, Vernier Software & Technology. Sponsorships for the NSTA Awards help support the science educators and their science educational programs, professional development and proactive efforts in the science education field.
For more information, contact Amanda Upton, the NSTA Awards and Recognition Program liaison, at 703.312.9217 or awards@nsta.org, or apply online by clicking on this link to see all award opportunities.

Teachers of Intermediate Students: Consider the Honeywell Once-In-A-Lifetime Professional Growth Opportunity
Are you a science or math teacher of students aged 10-14, looking for new and creative ways to bring STEM – science, technology, engineering and math – to life for your students? If so, the Honeywell Educators at Space Academy (HESA) program is the right fit for you.
Honeywell Hometown Solutions is now accepting applications to the all-expenses-paid 2017 HESA program. Hosted at the U.S. Space & Rocket Center (USSRC) in Huntsville, Alabama, this once-in-a-lifetime professional growth opportunity is designed to inspire teachers to develop a new generation of innovators and scientists in their classrooms.
FHSD teachers who have been previously involved in this opportunity include Missy Kelly and Melissa Tackett at Warren, Amy Howell at Henderson, and Jamie Pegg at Central. They will be happy to talk with you further if this is something you are interested in pursuing.
Introduced in 2004, the program has taught more than 2,500 HESA alumni from 56 countries, creative strategies for engaging students in STEM education. The wide range of experiential activities includes astronaut-style exercises and simulations, building and testing rockets, meeting veteran astronauts and much more. Teachers can take their first-hand HESA experiences back to the classroom and inspire students to pursue STEM education and careers.
Past participants credit their HESA experience for helping them feel more confident developing a STEM curriculum for the first time at their schools, improving their STEM teaching methods, re-igniting their passion for STEM learning and increasing their desire to cultivate future scientists across the world.
2017 HESA Dates: The weeks of June 14-20 and June 21-27, 2017
Applications open: September 1 – November 11, 2016
Scholarship includes: Tuition for the five-day program, round-trip airfare, meals, accommodation and program materials.
Scholarship recipients will be notified by the week of January 9, 2017.
