Dear Parents,
Our school will celebrate Red Ribbon Week October 23-27, 2017. Many students across the nation will have Red Ribbon Week at their schools. They wear red ribbons, dress in silly clothes, and learn about living drug-free and making healthy choices. Many students want to know why they wear red ribbons during this week.
In 1985, a brave officer gave his life to save people from drugs. To support this hero, people wore red ribbons. They believed in his cause. They wanted to show that they supported living drug-free. This group of people shared their idea with the then First Lady, Nancy Regan. She also cared a lot about living drug-free, so she wore a red ribbon as well.
Schools started supporting the red ribbon cause. They started wearing them for one week in October and November. Schools across the county joined in by wearing red ribbons. Students learned about being drug-free from an early age. They learned that drugs are bad and why drugs are dangerous. Parent Teacher Organizations helped organize weeks to wear red ribbons.
Soon, a group of people who supported families wanted to help. They founded National Red Ribbon Week. Mrs. Reagan asked lawmakers to help. They supported the idea and also wore red ribbons. The idea grew into a national celebration and every year, more than 80 million people celebrate Red Ribbon Week.
During Red Ribbon Week, students continue to learn about the dangers of alcohol, tobacco, incorrect medicine use, and other drugs. They learn ways to make good choices and to stand up to peer pressure. There are many reasons to be drug free and Red Ribbon Week is a time to remember those reasons together. Please join us and support your child and our school next week as we learn reasons to be healthy and live drug-free.
Sincerely,

NEW ATTENDANCE LAW
This is an important new attendance regulation our school district will be following this year and going forward!!
The United States Department of Education Office of Civil Rights (OCR) defines an “Absent Student” as one who doesn’t attend 50% of the instructional day”.
Keeping this state law in mind, if your child arrives at school at 7:45 am they must be in class until 11:05 am in order for them to be counted present for the day.
If you have any questions, please feel free to call the office.
