Stewart Stampede
October 2023
From the Principal
I hope everyone is doing well.
There are a few big events going on this month. Please be sure to look at the calendar in this newsletter so you don't miss anything.
Red Ribbon week begins on October 23rd. Red Ribbon Week continues to be the nations largest and longest drug prevention campaign. Schools across America recognize this week in many different ways. At Stewart, we talk about making healthy choices. The conversation will sound different in all grade levels and will be age appropriate. We also like to establish "theme" days and encourage students to dress to match the theme. Our Stewart Student Council chooses the dress themes for each day.
Also, our book fair takes place October 16- 20th. The book fair will be open from 7:30-3:00 each day. Parents are ALWAYS welcome to shop at the book fair. On Tuesday night the book fair will be open from 5:30-7:00PM for Family Night at the Fair. There will be activities for students and Silver our famous Mustang Mascot will be here as well.
We have been experiencing quite a bit of illnesses recently. We are encouraging good hand washing and the use of hand sanitizer. Please also encourage this at home. Several students come to school with a small bottle of hand sanitizer in their lunch box. This might be a great option for parents to consider so that students can sanitize their hands before eating lunch.
October is a great time of year, as we begin enjoying cooler weather. It's also the time when students wear more sweaters and jackets to school. Every year, we have over a hundred items that go unclaimed when school is out. It is very helpful if you write your child's name on the label of each piece of outer clothing they bring to school.
Finally, our Storybook Character Parade takes place on Friday, October 27th at 9:00AM. This is a fun day for all our students. Students in kindergarten through third grade can dress as their favorite character from a book. Fourth through sixth grade students will be the audience for the parade. Parents are also welcome. We hope to see you here.

Automated Library Notifications
Conroe ISD Library Services enabled daily email notifications, so you are informed of the items checked out by your student. Daily emails will list the item(s) currently checked out. If the book(s) your student selected is not a good fit, please have your student return it to the campus library and choose a new title. If you have questions about the book(s), please contact the school librarian.
Notifications for these daily messages can be managed in Parent Access Center (PAC). If you don’t have a PAC account, you will need to register for one to access the email settings. You can also view the item(s) your student checked out by logging in to Destiny Discover through your student's SSO account. You can further manage your student’s access to library materials by completing the Library Access Form found on the Library Services website along with viewing other helpful information. Please do not reply to this email as it comes from an unmonitored email account.

Are We Pushing Our Kids Too Hard?
Gifted and Talented Student Referral Timeframe:
Referral requests are now open for Conroe Independent School District Gifted and Talented program. Although the testing will not take place until late January, referral requests are accepted at this time. Referral requests can be made by the parents and/or campus staff. It is recommended that parents of 2 nd grade students wait until CogAT scores have arrived before nominating their child because CogAT scores are part of the GT assessment. If you are interested in referring your child, you may want to discuss this with your child’s teacher. Referrals will be accepted October 2- December 15, 2023. GT testing will occur during the window of January 22- February 2, 2024. Results will not be available until May 2024.
You may request a referral form from the front office or the Assistant Principal, Heather Paugh.
You can also find the referral form and other GT information on the CISD GT homepage.
Cogat Testing: 2nd Grade Students Only
The Cognitive Abilities Test (CogAT Test) will be administered to all CISD students at the second grade level. CogAT measures learned reasoning and problem-solving skills in three different areas: verbal, quantitative and nonverbal. Reasoning skills develop gradually throughout a person’s lifetime and at different rates for different individuals. CogAT does not measure such factors as effort, attention, motivation and work habits, which contribute to school achievement as well.
Our campus will be administering the test on October 17 & 18th . These tests will be scored by an independent company, and we anticipate that the results of the test for your child will arrive prior to our sending home the second nine-week grade report.
Please review with your child the importance of doing his/her best in testing situations. Attendance during these days of testing is very important, as make-ups may be difficult. Also, a good night’s sleep and a healthy breakfast are highly recommended.
If you would like additional information regarding these assessments, please contact
Heather Paugh at 936-709-4207.

Campus Safety
-When visiting the campus (for lunch, as a volunteer, PTO member, Watchdog, etc...) it is important to remember to check in at the front office with Bettzy Aguilar. Please only use the main front doors of the building (doors labeled #1 and # 2) to enter into the building.
-When checking in, Bettzy Aguilar will give each visitor a visitor's sticker. Please ensure that the sticker is worn in a visible location. Teachers and Staff members will be looking for visitors in the building to ensure that badges are being worn.
-When eating with your child/children at lunch, please remember that your child/children have to walk back to their classroom with their class and teacher. Parents may not walk down the hallways and escort their child/children back to class. Additionally, please do not ask another child to eat with you and your child. You may only sit and eat with your child.
-When either volunteering for the campus, coming in for the Stewart PTO, or a watchdog, please do not prop open any doors. All exterior doors must remain closed and locked at all times.
-When leaving the Stewart for the day, please check out with Bettzy Aguilar, give her your visitor's sticker, and exit out of the front doors of the building (doors labeled #1 and #2).
The date for the parade is on Friday, November 10th at 9:00AM.
