Week of January 22, 2019
- As readers, we read more about Dr. Martin Luther King to help us complete our MLK Lapbook. Be sure to ask your child about some of the important events in Dr. Martin Luther King's life and about how he changed our world.
- We continued to read our non-fiction books to help us write strong detailed sentences in our non-fiction books.
- Additionally, we began to read poetry and look for rhyming words. We used a highlighter to highlight the rhyming words we discovered. We also started a poetry notebook that will include the poems we read and then we will add pictures to go along with the poem. Our first two poems were about Martin Luther King and indoor recess.
- During FUNdations, we learned more about the Boss "e" and practiced writing and marking words with long vowels following the v-e pattern. We also practice making multi-syllabic words.
- Then, we completed our Unit 6 FUNdations assessment.
Writers' Workshop~
- During Writers' Workshop, we continued writing chapters for our non-fiction books. We used our non-fiction reading books to help us write stronger and longer detailed sentences.
- We also learned that writers' often add detailed, labeled pictures to their books help the reader visualize information and make their books more interesting. As non-fiction writers, we plan to do the same in our non-fiction books.
- Also, we started conferencing to revise and edit our chapters. And, we took a closer look at our writing to be sure we added proper punctuation, capitalization, spelling, and complete thoughts.
- To reinforce our spelling and dictionary skills, we used a dictionary to check the spelling of words we thought we may not have spelled correctly.
- During grammar, we used adjectives to describe and label a snowman we colored. Then, we wrote descriptive sentences using the adjectives we labeled on the snowman.
Mathematicians~
- As Mathematicians, we reviewed the skills that we have learned thus far in Math. Then, we completed our Mid-Year Assessment.
- We also learned more about adding and subtracting 10 and 100 to a number.
- For our Fun Friday centers, we completed an exploration working with arrays and using geoboards to make shapes. We also learned a new game called Clock Concentration. The game is played exactly like the regular game of concentration except we try to match the time with the analog clock.
Social Studies~
- During Social Studies, we started our next unit on Maps. We learned that all maps have a 'key' to help you locate and read a map more easily.
- We also learned about a map grid, directions, and a compass rose.
- To help reinforce our map skills, we created our own map of our classroom and added a map key.
- Also, we added a map key and compass rose to community projects we created in September. Then, the students presented their created community poster depicting the parts of the community where people live, work, play, and make decisions/keep people safe.
Other Activities~
- We celebrated receiving our 125th compliment by having a Reading Retreat with a twist. Aside from celebrating our regular reading retreat, we brought in our favorite board game to play with a few friends. Be sure to check out the photos below.
