Reminders

1/2 Day Classes will move Library Day to Monday for the rest of the year.

Please remember to send your child's library book back so that they can check out a new one. If your child has lost or damaged a book they cannot check out a new one until you have paid for it. Mrs. Russell has recently sent home over due book forms.

Dropping Off and Picking Up Your Child-Safety First

Please try to remember safety first. Recently in the afternoon at drop off, it was brought to the attention of the office, that parents are using 2 lines to drop off students. Please no getting out of your car to cross from the island or to drop students off on the other side of the street and cross them over. Please use a single line and drop off at the curb by the playground. You may have to wait and move with the line. Also please do not go around cars that may be loading or unloading. We do not want our students, staff or other parents to be injured. Please do not use your cell phone in our school zone.

Fire Trucks Coming to Visit

We have arranged for the Carrollton Fire Department to come and visit us this week. The Whole Day and PK AM group will get to see and explore a real fire truck on Monday May 2nd. The PK PM group will get to see the fire truck on Thursday May 5th.

This would be a good time to have the conversation about fire safety in your home.

WHAT WE ARE LEARNING

Language: Children will be able to identify all the letters of the alphabet. We should be able to name all the vowel letters-a,e,i,o,u. Please continue to review all the letters at home. We will be playing the game Make It, Break It. In this game, we will say a word like "fox" then we will break it apart. We will say the first sound and leave the rest of the word in tact- /f/-ox. We are verbally teaching blending of words and we will review rhyming and segmenting words. We will also start on taking away the first sound of a word. Example- say the word fox now say it with out the /f/ sound. The answer would be ox. This becomes a skill as we head toward reading. We will also be working with short constant, vowel , constant words like BUS, CAR, VAN, and FIX.

For show and tell this week students will be asked to bring a Matchbox or Hot Wheels type car to race in our tunnel. We will build a ramp out of a cardboard tube and the cars will race down it and we will record the distance the car travels.

Math: Your child will be able to rote count to 30 (4 year olds) and rote count to 10 (3 year olds). We will be starting measurement and measure each child's height. We will be working with words-tall,taller, tallest, short, shorter, shortest. We are also continuing to review all our shapes and colors.

Social Studies: Your child will be learning about different modes of transportation and how they effect people. We will discuss things that go in the air, on the land, and in the water.

Science:Your children will be learning about clean air modes of transportation. We will talk about the impact of different types of transportation and comparing their attributes.

Individual Testing for Pre-K students

This week we will continue meeting with your children for Individual Testing. We will be going over the skills on the PK 3 profile card and PK 4 profile card. Students will need to do their best. We want them to show what they know. What should they know? They should know upper case and lower case letters, letter sounds, how to write their name, count for us to either 10 (three year olds) or 30 (four year olds), and know how to make number sets to the number 10. In addition, students need to know colors and shapes. We will be expanding our language testing for all our students. We will be testing for rhyming and being able to blend the rime and onset of words, the beginning sounds of words-same or different, and clapping syllables in a word. Please make sure that your children are in school so we can test them. We will be breaking up the tasks over a few days. Your children are ready for this testing. We have been teaching all these skills throughout the year.

Indian Creek Elementary PK Field Day

Friday, May 20th, 2016

Parents,

Indian Creek Elementary has scheduled Field Day for Friday, May 20th. Our PK students will be participating along side the other students in our school. We have filled the day with many outdoor activities that PK students are sure to enjoy. Some events include a little water to help cool them off!!

The schedule for this year’s Field Day is as follows:

8:30-10:30 PK whole day/PPCD AM and PK AM

1:00-2:00 PK PM and PPCD PM

Note the following items to help your child prepare for Field Day:

1. Tennis/running shoes are required. Do not wear slip-on shoes of any type (no sandals or flip-flops). Every event is active, so the correct shoes are very important. Students should wear comfortable clothing and YELLOW tie- dye shirts from Fun Run so they can participate in all field day events.

2. Items you may wish to send for the comfort and protection of your child include: sunscreen, hat, and sunglasses. It is best to apply sunscreen in the morning before they leave home to be sure they are covered properly. TEACHERS CANNOT APPLY SUNSCREEN.

3. There are several water stations for the students to cool off while having a blast! Students might want to bring a towel to dry off if necessary and re-useable water bottle with their name written on it.

4. All PK sections will have breakfast at 8 am. The lunch schedule on this day will be a little different. You may send a lunch, or your child may purchase a lunch from the cafeteria.

The cafeteria lunch consists of: hot dog or hamburger, sun butter and jelly sandwich, whole apples, bananas, cucumbers, baby carrots and 1% milk or assorted juice. The cost for ENROLLED Indian Creek students is $2.35. Parents may purchase a cafeteria lunch on field day for $3.25. Parents, if you plan on purchasing a lunch from the cafeteria please complete order form below and return 3rd.

We are looking forward to a fun-filled, Field Day!
