“We succeed only when students succeed. That is our goal. That is our passion. That is our work.” Nate Davis
What's New!
- Thank you for going "All In" at this year's HOS Summit. Your ideas, energy and engagement made it a tremendous experience for all. These pictures tell our story.
- If you would like to use the random name picker in an upcoming PD session or to share with teachers in your schools, here is a video Brandi created showing teachers how to set it up and use it in the classroom.
Head of School in the Spotlight
Ryan Clepper
School: MAVA
Began: August 2010
Superpower:
Fun fact: My first teaching position was in a juvenile detention center. I was first introduced to virtual education and how it works while I was employed there in 2005. A couple of students that I taught were in an online school in Ohio.
Advice To Leaders: I would tell a new leader to be open minded and gather other's perspectives while making decisions for your school.
Change is good--You go first!
Change Management Corner
Ensure Shared Perspective Will Pay Dividends Next June:
Before you roll out any change, it is best to ensure your team has a shared perspective. Most school employees are with you because they care about children. However, ulterior motives can sometimes get in the way. During the summit you were given sample questions to guide conversations with your team and potential ambassadors. As you start your planning for the FY16-17 school, be sure to have these conversations. Understand what motivates your employees, and if necessary, help point their car in the right direction of successful change.
To Sell Is Human
One of the most fundamental skills of a leader is to successfully persuade others. In Daniel Pink’s book To Sell Is Human you will discover that while 1 in 9 Americans works in sales, the other 8 also works in sales no matter their job. Whether we are pitching an idea to clients, persuading our children to do their homework, or inspiring our team to move mountains, we are trying to move others to take the action we desire. In Pink’s book, you will learn how to understand another’s perspective, frame your message so it is clear and persuasive and much more. To Sell Is Human will help you work better with your boards, authorizers, teams and other stakeholders.
Cheers to You!
Take an opportunity to celebrate a colleague(s) via our weekly "Cheers" shout outs. Here are this week's cheers:
- Erica Seybert for spending two days with us at NCVA to help think through some components of our FAST program. The encouragement and assistance are invaluable for us as a brand new school
- Sharon Williams and Niyoka McCoy for the “V-8 moments” to help refocus during the school’s first year.
We would like to highlight your Cheers in the next HOS Highlights newsletter. Feel free to cheer for regional teams as well as your fellow HOS's. Please submit your cheers on the form below.

2015/16 Leadership Academy Content and Focus
2015-2016 Leadership Standards and Practices
Leadership Academy #1- "Explore U": YOU are the focus of Leadership Academy #1 entitled, Explore "U". Throughout the first seven weeks we will focus on your strengths as indicated in the Myers-Briggs assessment most of you took in January, 2015. Throughout the cycle you will build upon your strengths and learn to leverage those strengths to minimize weaknesses.
Leadership Academy #2- "Build It and They Will Come": Your knowledge and expertise will be leveraged to build out content for one of the leadership strands. Each School leader chooses one standard to work with over the course of the 7 week cycle. The goal will be to codify your expertise within the leadership strand to build a complete leadership Academy cycle in your area chosen area.
Leadership Academies #3-5-: Once the content is built, you will choose one strand to focus on for the remaining cycles. Choice is built into the process and we would like you to choose two standards. We suggest you work with your RVP/DRVP to choose one leadership strand that you would like additional support in. The strands include: Strategic Leadership, Instructional Leadership, Community, Human Resources, and Organizational Management.
