Tips for Parents & Guardians to Support Student Writing
- Think of yourself as a collaborator, not an evaluator. Focus on the 'big picture' elements of writing, such as the argument or organization.
- Ask your student what they want you to read for - that way, you have a purpose for reading and know you're giving them the feedback they want.
- Have them read their writing out loud. They may notice any problems on their own, just by 'hearing' it.
- Find a specific thing about the paper to praise - maybe the introduction is interesting, or they have a turn of phrase that sounds just right.
