Principal's Update ~ May/June 2018

Dear Orchard Hill Families,

It's difficult to believe that another school year is coming to an end! The amount of student growth from September to June is always amazing. The students have grown tremendously as readers, writers, mathematicians and scientists! Mrs. Dudley and I enjoy this time of year when teachers invite us to celebrate the learning that has happened all year with special presentations. We know that you join us in celebrating your child's success this school year. We are very proud of their accomplishments in all of these areas including their growth as students who demonstrate the core values of good character. Thank you for all of your support in this journey...as the saying goes "it takes a village".

Our second graders enjoyed a "move-up day" visit to VES and learned all about their new school from Principal Lacy, Asst. Principal Maccarone and many 3rd grade experts! We wish them all the best as they transition to VES. The Kindergarten and First Grade students also had a mini move-up day with OHES teachers to get an experience for what next year will bring.

We welcomed a new group of Kindergarten students and their families to OHES at our orientation on May 18. Whether new or returning families, we look forward to working together over the next three years and encourage getting involved with our PTA!

As this school year comes to a close we look forward to many end of year celebrations with our students. It's been a fantastic year! We wish all of our students and families a relaxing summer and look forward to welcoming everyone back in September.

Warmest regards,

Mrs. Scotti and Mrs. Dudley

Congratulations are in Order!

It is with excitement that I share good news with our OHES community! Our Assistant Principal, Mrs. Karen Dudley, is moving on to be the Principal of Watchung Elementary School in Middlesex, NJ. We wish Mrs. Dudley all the best as she assumes this new leadership role and begins the next chapter in her professional life. The students in Middlesex are lucky to have her. We will all miss Mrs. Dudley in Montgomery!

Student Placement Process 2018-2019

As the end of the school year approaches, plans for classroom placements are being made. Building administration will work closely with classroom teachers and guidance counselors to place current K-2 students. We will place all 2nd graders into 3rd grade with the assistance of VES principal, Ms. Lacy. All students will be placed in heterogeneous classes with the best possible teacher match, a positive group of classmates, and a few familiar students from previous classes. Any specific academic needs will be considered first for all student placement.

Parents of current Kindergarten, 1st and 2nd graders are welcome to share any vital information about their child with the building administration that the school does not already have.

This information must be in writing and may not include requests for specific teachers or placement with specific students. Please note that pertinent information shared in past years must be resubmitted. Letters or emails must be received by June 15.

Please trust us to make the best placement possible for all children. It is important to us that students have successful academic and developmentally appropriate experiences in school with talented and caring teachers. Final placement information will be available in August on-line through Parent Resources.

A Note From the Health Office

If your child currently has medication in stock in the health office, please plan to stop by anytime on June 20 to pick it up. New Jersey state law prohibits public schools from storing medications in the health office over the summer. this includes Epi-Pens, inhalers, insulin, eye drops, and prescription and non-prescription medications, such as Tylenol, Advil or Benadryl. All medications not picked up by a parent by 1:30 p.m. on June 21, 2018 will be discarded in compliance with state regulations. Students are not allowed to carry any medication home in their backpacks as per Montgomery Township School District policy. Exceptions cannot be made to this policy.

If your student has a Life Threatening Allergy or Asthma please have the appropriate medical forms completed by your child's physician for the 2018-2019 school year and bring them to the Health Office (along with any medication) before the first day of school. We cannot use this year's completed forms.

Health Forms for the 2018-2019 school year will be sent to parents electronically. Please log onto your Parent Resources account to ensure the email address on file reflects a current working email address.

The Health Office at OHES wishes you and your family a happy and safe summer!
