Carnegie Chronicle
July 2023
Note from the Director
Wow, it's been a whirlwind of a summer with 126 participants who read an impressive 27,570 minutes!!! We hope you had as much fun as we did with so many free activities, performances, and projects in addition to all that reading! The Prize Store will be open until July 31st, so if you have worksheets or reading logs to turn in, please stop by before then to redeem your Carnegie Cash. We announced our top 4 readers at the end-of-summer Groovin' Garden Party and had a great time dancing with Mömandpöp.
Even though the summer reading program events are over, we continue with Pre-K Song & Story Time every Wednesday at 10:30, and LEGO Club every Thursday at 3:30 throughout the year. Both programs will be held in the Main Library children's room.
Look for this newsletter on the third Tuesday of each month. This gives us time to wrap up the previous month, and let you know what's coming up the following month.
All the best,
Christina Danos
Science + Philosophy Discussion Group
Come explore “the Ultimate Question of Life, the Universe, and Everything.” We know the answer is 42, but what is the question? Wednesdays and Thursdays at 12:30 PM. Wednesdays we look top down through the lens of morality and ethics with Foucault on Nietzsche and their influence on contemporary postmodernism. Thursdays we view bottom up with Entangled Life: How Fungi Make Our Worlds, Change Our Minds & Shape Our Futures by Merlin Sheldrake. Sometimes we put the GPT-4 Babelfish in our ear for a translation, looking for order in the chaos. For more info: Gary.Milczarek@gmail.com.
First Friday Book Club
Drop into the Library Annex Meeting Room on Friday, August 4th at 10:30am to watch the 1966 classic film Fahrenheit 451 and pick up a copy of The Personal Librarian. This is a remarkable novel about J. P. Morgan’s personal librarian, Belle da Costa Greene, the Black American woman who was forced to hide her true identity and pass as white in order to leave a lasting legacy that enriched our nation, from New York Times bestselling authors Marie Benedict and Victoria Christopher Murray. The Personal Librarian will be discussed on Friday, September 1st at 10:30am.
Conversational Spanish Group and Beginner Spanish Class
The Conversational Spanish Group meets weekly on Tuesdays at 5:00pm. Come to the library meeting room to practice Spanish with other language learners of varying abilities - this group is for anyone who speaks Spanish or wants to! The informal atmosphere will be led each week by native speaker, Carmen Rose.
Every Thursday at 5:00pm, Carmen teaches a Beginner Spanish Class, for those who are just learning and aren't quite ready for the Tuesday group. All ages welcome!
LEGO Club
Preschool song and story time
Story time meets on Wednesday mornings at 10:30am in the children's room or library garden. Families with young children are invited to join us for some circle time songs, a snack, stories, and the opportunity to meet new friends!
Music in Grotto Spring
During the summer months, every Wednesday from 4:30pm-6:00pm in the cool cave of Grotto Spring you may hear the soulfully sweet tunes of our very own Don Matt and the talented Scott Thompson as they play acoustic folk tunes for any and all those lucky enough to sit for a spell and give a listen.
Eureka Springs Beekeepers
Meeting on the last Wednesday of each month at 6:00pm (July 26th) in the library meeting room, this group is for anyone in the area that keeps Honeybees or is interested in learning more about the hobby! All are welcome.
