Next week is National No Name Calling Week and One School One Book Week
National No Name Calling Week, January 15-19, 2018, is a week organized by K-12 educators and students to end name-calling and bullying in schools. During the month of January, both the Primary and Elementary students will receive a lesson on No Name Calling and Bullying. These lessons will be presented by the school social workers and students will learn the definition of bullying (1. Someone is being mean with their actions and/or their words, 2. It is on purpose, 3. There is an imbalance of power, 4. It happens again and again/repeatedly) and what to do if they see bullying. If they are the victim, options that will be presented are: 1. Ignore, 2. Say how you feel, 3. Walk away, 4.Report to the closest adult-(Students will be taught that this is the most important step in stopping a bully). If a bystander, the options are: 1. Speak up, 2. Reach out, 3. Be a Friend.
During No Name Calling Week, both buildings will be celebrating by having a daily theme which also supports our Special Reading Week:
January 15th/Monday- No School
January 16th/Tuesday- Be Comfortable with yourself. Wear comfortable clothes to school. Yes, they can wear appropriate pajamas! Teachers will be reading the book, Last Stop on Market Street. This book is on this year’s Monarch list and has previously been a Newbery winner.
January 17th/Wednesday- United in our Community day to help our community and stop name calling and bullying. Wear red, white, and blue. There will also be a food drive all week for the Grant Township.
January 18th/Thursday- Give name calling the slip. Bring slippers to school. Please have students bring slippers in their backpack and teachers will let students know when they can wear them.
January 19th/Friday- -Black out Bullying. Wear Black.
In addition to our No Name Calling Theme week, primary students will have the opportunity to participate in a coloring contest and elementary students can enter a poem or poster contest. Entries can be obtained from the classroom teacher. The elementary school will also be participating in a daily Kindness challenge during the entire month of January.
For One Book, One School students will be doing a variety of activities connected to the picture book Last Stop on Market Street. We will also have a non-perishable food drive for Grant Township. Students can bring canned or boxed food any day next week. Let's help the Grant Township food pantry stock their shelves.
2018-19 Kindergarten Night

We Need Your Feedback!
A key piece of our “school improvement” process is to periodically gather feedback from parents/students/staff and gather data on how we can better serve our school community. We want to know what you think is working and what is not working. We would GREATLY appreciate it if you would take a few minutes to complete the following two surveys:
- The first survey is one that we give on our own and will receive immediate feedback and really will only take a minute. If you have a child in more than one building, it will ask you to take the survey once for each building. If you have to complete multiple building surveys, you may need to use a different device each time. Here is the link to this survey:
https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/BHSD-Parents
- The second survey is required by the Illinois State Board of Education (ISBE) for us to administer, and it is called the 5-Essentials Survey. The data from this survey is eventually posted online and is utilized by ISBE in rating our school on our annual school report card. Here is the link to this survey:
https://survey.5-essentials.org/illinois/survey/parent/login/
We assure you that both surveys are anonymous, and that we value the input that is received by all of you. Our administrative team and Board will review the final data and set goals for improvement based on the feedback we receive.
Thank you so much!
Ready, Set, . . . STEM event!
- If you think your child may be interested in Science, Technology, Engineering or Math (STEM), then there is an exciting event that is happening in our community that you will want to take part in. On Saturday, February 10th from noon – 5:00 p.m., Big Hollow has joined with other area school districts to host “Ready, Set….STEM” at Grant Community High School. This event is free to all families and you can come and go as you please. There will be over 70 different STEM activities that kids can participate in as well as live experiment demonstrations. Here is a flyer with more information: STEM event.pdf
Some Friendly Reminders -
Drop off time for students at primary and elementary begins at 8:15 am. When using the drop off lane, please be sure that students exit the vehicle on the curb side. Parents may not exit the vehicle. Be sure students only exit when your car is parked between the two crosswalks. We can best ensure the safety of all students, parents, and staff when our drop off procedures are followed.
If you are picking up your child from school, you must notify the school office by 2:15 pm. You can call earlier in the day, or even, days ahead of time. It is also very helpful to send your child's teacher a note in the agenda or an email.
