Soaring Over MDE

We made it....
I want to congratulate all of you for surviving a week living on the sun! I am very ready for the cooler temperatures that are in the forecast for next week!
As mentioned earlier this morning and all year: Please remember that when dropping off or picking up your student you should not get out of your car. This is for both Mt. Zion Drive and Pine Hollow Rd. Please remember that both locations are a drop-off not a stop and get out. If you would like to park on the surrounding streets and then get out of your car, this is a perfect solution.

Hello Mt. Diablo Elementary Families! My name is Kathleen Norgaard and I will be your school counselor this year. I am very excited to join the Mt. Diablo staff. I will be on campus on Monday and Tuesday. My role as a school counselor is to support students to be the best they can be! I have spent the first few weeks of school getting to know the students. This month I am going to be visiting classrooms to teach some SEL lessons. What is SEL? SEL is Social Emotional Learning. MDUSD uses the CASEL framework. The framework is composed of 5 competencies: self-awareness, self-management, social awareness, relationship skills, and responsible decision-making. Developing these skills is crucial for student success.
I will be focusing on self-awareness and self-management this month. Self-awareness is the ability to understand one’s own emotions, thoughts, and values and how they influence behavior across contexts. This includes being able to recognize one’s strengths and limitations with a well-grounded sense of confidence and purpose. Self-management is the ability to manage one’s emotions, thoughts, and behaviors effectively in different situations and to achieve goals and aspirations. This includes the capacities to delay gratification, manage stress, and feel motivation and agency to accomplish personal and collective goals. Many students need support identifying their emotions and then managing their behavior. On the playground we are working on keeping our hands to ourselves, using words to express our feelings, and knowing when we need to take a break from an activity. I am also working with students on using “I” statements.
At home you can help support your student. The first step in self management is getting enough sleep, exercise, and healthy foods. When the body is regulated it helps the mind be regulated. Help your child build self confidence by encouraging them to complete tasks independently. Children need to make mistakes to build confidence. Try not to do for them what they can do for themselves. Here is a great article about how you can help your child build self confidence: https://childmind.org/article/12-tips-raising-confident-kids/.
I am looking forward to this new school year! If you need to reach me, my email is norgaardk@sanjuan.edu

If your student is absent...
Please ONLY contact our Attendance Secretary, Misty Kirk-Nimr at kirknimrm@mdusd.org OR call 925-672-4840 x84502. Parent Square messages are not making it to Misty. If you have questions regarding returning to school after your child has been sick, please contact Misty as welll. Telling your child's teacher is not enough. Misty or our office staff must speak to a parent or guardian .
When signing out your child
Please make sure when you sign your child out (when taking them out early) to include the reason you told the office. We have quite a few people who write different reasons in our log.
Keep Connected to the PFC
Please make sure you are signed up for communication directly from our PFC (including Room Parents.) This is the platform that is used by the PFC for communication.
All communications directly from the school/teacher will still come from Parent Square.
