Summary: Cory's dance crew is getting ready for a major competition. It's the last one before they graduate eighth grade and go their separate ways to high schools all over New York City, so they have to make it count! The group starts to have problems as their crew captain gets increasingly intense about nailing the routine, and things go from bad to worse when Cory's parents ground him for not taking his grades seriously. With mounting pressure coming from all sides, how is Cory supposed to balance the expectations of his parents, school, dance, and his tutor?

NEW! MVMS Library is looking for more hardcover copies of The Crossover by Kwame Alexander
Happy School Library Month!
In addition to Arab American Heritage Month and National Poetry Month, April is also celebrated as School Library Month. Libraries play an important role in our students’ lives. From curating a diverse book collection, to lessons with classes, to technology support, and programs and activities, our library has been integral to our Eagle Community. Currently, our library is looking for copies of The Crossover by Kwame Alexander (link) for our final book club of the year and for future lit circles. Our library also has an Amazon wish list of requested titles by our students and staff, recommendations, and for those books that have been lost or damaged. The Crossover and the other two books from The Crossover Series can be found on the Wish List too. We appreciate your continued support and wish you a lovely spring break! *Looking to learn more about School Library Month? Happy Arab American Heritage Month
April has been proclaimed as Arab American Heritage Month since 2017. There is much to be learned and enjoyed about our Arab American Community. One crucial fact we all should know is Not all Arabs are Muslim, and Not All Muslims are Arab. This is a great clip that shares Arab American Heritage in more detail. Please enjoy this slide deck created by Arab American Foundation for more information about Arab American Heritage Month. Here are 9 Surprising Facts about the Arabic Language. Additionally, San Diego County Office of Education has great resources on National Arab American Heritage Month (link). Our library is looking for help to showcase Arab American Heritage Month. If you would like to help, have some resources to share, please reach out to Heather Ferguson at hferguson@powayusd.com or stop by the library. Click HERE to view a video!
Thank you for your partnership and support of our Mesa Verde community.
Ramadan is here
Ramadan, the nine month of the Islamic calendar, began on the evening of Wednesday, March 22nd and ends on the evening of Friday, April 21st. Ramadan is observed by Muslims worldwide as a month of fasting, prayer, reflection, and community. We are preparing our Ramadan display in the library to celebrate our Muslim community. If you would like to help us with the display, please contact Rosemean Hussain at rosemean@gmail.com or Heather Ferguson at hferguson@powayusd.com. We created a Wish List of books to continue to diversify our library with the help of @islamicschoollibrarian (you can find her on Instagram).

COUNSELING CORNER
GENERAL INFORMATION
The difference between a Guest, a Visitor and a Volunteer as per the PUSD Board Policies
1. A Visitor is defined as an individual who, with school district authorization, attends a student performance, special event, festival, open house, back-to-school event, sports event, athletic competition, etc. A visitor may either be accompanied or unaccompanied by school district staff. Designated school district administrative personnel are to make this determination. A visitor is usually not required to sign a registry.
Example: Your school is being recognized for achievement and members of SDCOE are coming to watch students or your school is hosting a Jr. Olympic competition.
2. A Guest is defined as an individual who, with school district approval, assists students, schools, and teachers on a non-regular basis or who individually observes a classroom or activity. A guest may also assist with educational programs or with special events on an occasional or infrequent basis. A guest shall immediately report his or her presence at the school office or at the designated school location upon arrival at the school and sign a guest registry.
Example: Your school is hosting the book fair, a play where parents are coming to watch, or a teacher needs help in the classroom with a one- or two-day tie-dye t-shirt project for the jog-a-thon. A class is hosting a party or a fun run.
3. A Volunteer is defined as an individual who, with school district authorization, voluntarily assists school districts, schools, educational programs, or students on a regular and ongoing basis. A volunteer is required to complete a Volunteer Application and have a Megan’s Law Background Check or a State and/or Federal Background Check completed.
Example: A parent is assisting with a weekly and ongoing project such as the running club or Lego league. A grandparent is helping in music or art classes weekly. A field trip chaperone and/or driver (usually requires Level 1 and 2 applications).
If someone is coming to help in the class only one or two times, they are not considered volunteers therefore do not need to fill out a Level 1 application.
