WHAT'S HAPPENING AT RMMS? GOOD STUFF ALWAYS!
“Intelligence plus character — that is the goal of true education.”
– Martin Luther King Jr.
END OF YEAR BEHAVIOR REMINDERS
Please talk with your scholar about their behavior. The following things are not permitted and could result in a home suspension:
1. Bringing water balloons to school
2. Engaging in any kind of water or food fight
3. Engaging in any kind of play fighting (this is happening a lot and never ends well)
Safety is our #1 priority and your support is much appreciated. Please review behavior expectations with your scholar and check their backpack daily to ensure they have none of the items not permitted at school. Check the Handbook for the list.
Kaiser Permanente Get Fit and Thrive Challenge
The Get Fit and Thrive Challenge, now in its 18th year, is presented by the San Diego County Childhood Obesity Initiative, Kaiser Permanente, and Star 94.1 along with other community partners, including SDCOE. The activities are designed to promote healthy family living. Kids can find easy activities listed on the program's performance card, such as completing fun workouts from the YMCA, taking a family bike ride, get healthy living tips from the Kaiser Permanente website, or checking out family activity books from the library.
Active participants will be entered to win tickets to the San Diego Zoo and the grand prize of a weekend getaway for a family of four at the Hotel del Coronado. To take part in the challenge, students need to download a challenge card, complete five easy activities, and submit their card via email or regular mail before the Aug. 31 deadline. Visit the program webpage for more details and to download the challenge card. Contact Sierra Carruth with any questions.
SHADE PROJECT
RMMS is under construction! The Balfour Beatty team is hard at work getting all the work done for our new lunch area shade structures. Work continues on removing earth in preparation for the new concrete footings. They will be working on moving the utilities this weekend, which will require turning off the gas to the campus. We appreciate them working on the weekend to avoid doing this work with scholars on campus.
FREE NCTD BUS FOR SCHOLARS!
To take part in the free program, children 18 and under will have to sign up for a Youth PRONTO app account or a Youth PRONTO card. Information on PRONTO can be found at https://bit.ly/3rv3ONd.

SUMMER READING PROGRAMS
San Diego Public Library
The San Diego Public Library’s summer reading program for this year, Read Beyond the Beaten Path, is open to community members of all ages. Encourage your students to sign up for this event to venture beyond the beaten path and read! Readers can complete a combination of 10 books, hours of reading, or activities to claim prizes. Sign ups begin June 1 and the program runs through Aug. 31. Participants can register online or visit any of the 36 San Diego Public Library locations to sign up and pick up a reading log.
Scholastic Home Base
Scholastic's free summer reading program, Home Base, lets kids enter their summer reading minutes online between now and Aug. 19. Readers earn digital rewards as they extend their reading streak. They can also attend online author events, interact with their favorite characters, play book-based games and activities, and more.
After readers reach certain levels of minutes collectively, Scholastic will donate books to kids in need across the United States. Visit the Scholastic website for complete details.
Barnes & Noble
Teachers can download and distribute a summer reading journal to students in grades 1 to 6. After reading eight books, students bring in their journal to any Barnes & Noble store during July and August to choose a free book from a grade-level list of titles. Visit the Barnes & Noble Summer Reading webpage for reading opportunities for other age groups.
APPOINTMENTS REQUIRED
Thank you for helping us help YOU! It is essential that parents/families make appointments to see Administrators at RMMS. We know sometimes things come up quickly, however, in order to serve our families, we need you to schedule an appointment. Parents who arrive on campus prior to school beginning will need to wait until school starts to meet with an Administrator. Please note that all Administrators are on campus, welcoming scholars, each morning from 8:00 am - 8:30 am. Administrators are not available to meet with parents during this time. We thank you for your understanding and patience. Please schedule an appointment by calling 760-631-4500.
Our scholars are assigned an Administrator based on their last names. We are all here to help! Please call Ms. Claudia at 760-631-4500, x64006, to set up an appointment if needed or click on the AP's name to email them directly in English or Spanish. Be sure to include your scholar's name.
- Assistant Principal Mr. Dillard is assigned to scholars with last names A-L
- Assistant Principal Mr. Selleck is assigned to scholars with last names M-Z.

IMPORTANT COVID INFORMATION
KEEP YOUR SCHOLAR HOME IF THEY DON'T FEEL WELL
Please remember that if your scholar doesn't feel well, please keep them home. In addition, if you are waiting for a test result for your scholar, or anyone in your family, please do not send the scholar to school until you receive a negative test. You will help us keep RMMS open and healthy. We don't want to have to send scholars home. Thank you for helping us!!!
QUARANTINING DURING COVID
We appreciate your support as we continue to work through all the challenges with COVID protocols. Thank you for helping our school stay safe and healthy by checking in with your scholar about how they are feeling AND keeping them home if they don't feel 100%. If they come to school not feeling well, they could be sent home to quarantine. Please know that CANVAS is the district approved learning management system for all scholars in VUSD. If your scholar is quarantined, please know that it may take a day or two for the teachers to get all the assignments uploaded and ready to go.
We will not be sending out school wide letters to families if we have a COVID positive scholar at RMMS. We WILL include that information in this newsletter. Only those families that have a scholar who is considered a close contact will be notified directly.
Check out the COVID INFORMATION NEWSLETTER and the VUSD COVID-19 Dashboard below.
NTCD BUS INFORMATION
If your scholar rides the NCTD bus, please be sure they ask the driver if they are going to Rancho Minerva. The normal Route 334 DOES NOT go to RMMS. We have a special bus that brings scholars to RMMS in the morning. Please remind your scholar to ask before getting on the bus. We don't want them to end up somewhere else! See the schedules below.
Below is the link to the NCTD website that contains all the PRONTO information scholars and families will need. If you have questions, call Customer Service at 760.966.6500 or the PRONTO Support Team at 619.595.5636. https://gonctd.com/fares/pronto/

REMINDERS FROM PREVIOUS NEWSLETTERS
LATE START MONDAYS
Just a reminder that all middle schools in VUSD have late start Mondays. We begin school at 9:30 am every Monday. Gates open at 9 am. Please do not drop off your scholar prior to 9 am. Please check with ASES if you need AM/PM care for your scholar.
CELL PHONES ON CAMPUS
All scholars are reminded to power down their cell phones and to put them in their backpacks each morning during the announcements. If a scholar needs to reach their family, they are able to access the phones in classrooms or in Scholar Services. If a scholar's phone is seen out (for example, in their back pocket), it could be confiscated and held for parent pickup. Thank you for your support in advance.
Assembly Bill 272, signed into law on July 1, 2019, allows schools to limit the use of smartphones while scholars are on campus. "The bill declares that there is growing evidence that unrestricted use of smartphones by students during the school day interferes with the educational mission of schools; lowers pupil performance, particularly among low-achieving pupils; promotes cyberbullying; and contributes to an increase in teenage anxiety, depression and suicide." Click here for more information.
NUTRITION
Per our handbook, please be sure scholars leave candy, large bags of chips, sodas, and energy drinks at home. All purchased drinks (like Starbucks, McDonalds, etc) need to be finished prior entering 1st period. In addition, please remind your scholar to bring a refillable water bottle to school to stay hydrated.
