Controlled Burn of a Remnant Prairie - Seven Oaks School Division
Treaty One Land. 1985 Grassmere Road. 49 acres.
The home of the Seven Oaks School Division Service Centre and Ozhaawashkwaa Animikii-Bineshi Aki Onji Kinimaagae' Inun (Blue Thunderbird Land-Based Teachings Learning Centre)
Over 2017 and 2018, a 1 km long and 30 metre wide ditch along 1985 Grassmere was surveyed for Indigenous plants. With the help of local ecologist, John P. Morgan, this area was deemed a remnant prairie, or a fragment of the original Tallgrass Prairie that once covered this area. Species like Smooth Camas indicated that it could potentially hold more than we saw at the time. With proper stewardship and management, this degraded area could be enhanced. Hence, John recommended a controlled burn to revitalize the area, and maintain its biodiversity. The beginning of a long commitment to stewardship and learning on this land. Volunteer and skilled videographer, Wendy Beulow, graciously captured this practice for Seven Oaks School Division, and all teachers and learners out there. Enjoy!

About two kids who try to get an old garden whipped back into shape on the farm their parents have just bought.
