Visual Phonics at NCOESC
See the Sound Visual Phonics
August 17, 2017
8:30 AM - 3:30 PM
NCOESC Tiffin Campus - 928 W. Market St., Tiffin, Oh 44883
See the Sound Visual Phonics is a multi-sensory strategy; a combination of tactile kinesthetic, visual and auditory. It uses 45 hand cues and symbols to teach phonemic awareness and letter-sound correspondence to all level of learners. Participants are actively involved in learning the 45 hand cues and symbols individually and in small groups using various activities. They are observed by the trainers for accuracy of the hand cues and symbols.
This strategy works with all level of learners from regular education students to those with various learning needs. It works across grade levels. Suggestions are given on how to incorporate this strategy into daily routines. Participants will be given time to collaborate on ways to use it in their individual classrooms. Trainers can give help and suggestions.
Amy Tuck and Debbie Brink are teachers with Akron Public Schools. Amy has taught in the early learning program and elementary age students with mild to intensive disabilities. She has been a teacher for 19 years. Debbie has taught elementary to high school age students with mild to intensive disabilities, and has been teaching for 28 years. Both started using See the Sound Visual Phonics in their classroom in 2003 and have been training for 11 years.

7 Habits Training (Leader in Me) 8/21/17
Let's plan to meet on 6/7, 6/21, 7/5, 7/19. after The Daily 5 book study. Let's meet from 11-11:30 (ish). We may not need all dates listed. If you can't physically make it to a meeting, but can phone conference, we can do that!
Summer book study update
A book study would fall under a group 4 professional development activity. For that, there is a pre-approval process. I have a form that each member of the book study would need to complete. That needs signed by the LPDC and then the members of the book study would log there days/times that they participate. There is a maxim of 3 ceu's per license cycle for this particular activity.
We will be looking at Wednesday's opposite of the Summer Reading program. Dates are 6/7, 6/21, 7/5, 7/19. Let's meet 9:30 -11:00 AM here at school. I'm good with a hybrid of in person and online if you'd like also- let me know.
Fast ForWord Intervention FAQ's
Top 5 FAQs
Using Fast ForWord with struggling readers
Fast ForWord is well known amongst educators for its scientifically validated approach to reading intervention. Using the principles of neuroplasticity, Fast ForWord is the only online reading intervention program that effectively addresses the root causes of students’ reading and learning difficulties.
If you still have questions about how Fast ForWord works or which students it is best suited for, you’re not alone. Here are the top 5 frequently asked questions about using Fast ForWord.
#1 How do I choose appropriate students?
Answer: Fast ForWord is most commonly used with students who: 1) are most in need of reading intervention, 2) score far below basic or below basic on assessments, 3) are not making adequate yearly reading progress, and 4) are English language learners making limited gains on yearly assessments.
#2 How do I schedule this at my school?
Answer: Other schools use Fast ForWord during dedicated RtI time, “power hour”, before/after school, during ELD time, or all of the above! Based on your specific goals and your school schedule there are a number of different protocols for how long and how often students should use the program. It’s recommended that students use Fast ForWord at least 30 minutes a day at least 3 days each week.
#3 How do I measure progress for RTI?
Answer: Most schools follow student progress with our built-in assessment, Reading Progress Indicator. RPI is a nationally normed, computerized assessment that rapidly measures Fast ForWord effectiveness, providing a clear picture of reading skills in terms of grade equivalents and percentile scores.
#4 What technology can I use?
Answer: Fast ForWord is accessible from any location with internet access. Students can use desktop computers, laptops, Chromebooks, and iPads to access Fast ForWord at school or at home.
#5 When can I expect to see results?
Answer: Educators start seeing changes in students within the first 8 weeks. The more students use the program, the faster the results come – Fast ForWord offers 5x more intensive intervention than small group reading instruction or other approaches.
BLT Highlights
- ELA - next year we will be using (R) A C E (S) as our building wide writing strategy. Classroom posters, etc will be made for you- so don't sweat it.
- ELA - We will be using the Dolch sight word list for grades K-3 next year. This list will also be a part of IAT data.
- Writing - We need to look for a date to tweak the pre-assessment questions for next fall. If you were part of the assessment writing crew, please send me some dates. This can be late in May.
- Math - We (in future TBTs) will be creating a pre/post test for problem solving. The foldables for grades 1-5 and math journals for K and 6 will be the progress monitoring piece.
Google Classroom
ELA Standards Update
To build to that level, the standards ask a student in grades K-5 to retell or summarize the text. In grade 6 and beyond, a student should be able to narrow that summary of the text by including only key components of the text to create a more complex summary. If a student struggles to do this, a teacher may go back in the vertical alignment to see if the student has mastered the standards for the previous grade levels. A student needs to master the basic summarizing skills before he or she can master the skill of producing a more complex account or of the story or text.
The teacher can then differentiate, or tailor the lessons and supports to a student's needs, to help the student reach the skills in the standard at their current grade level."

Math Foldables
Several teachers had researched and implemented math foldables from TPT. They are finding student success and the foldables questions mirror what's asked on State testing. Mr. Anway OK'd the purchase of grade 1 -3. Thank you to Ann Bowman for taking care of the requisition process on this project. These will become part of our problem solving OIP goal for 17-18. Feel free to take a peek! They're in my office.
