Welcome to our first school newsletter for 2023
I hope you are all having/have had a relaxing holiday break and have made many cool memories with your child/ren families and friends :)
I have caught up with many of the staff back at school and they all have all had wonderful breaks! They are getting ready to start back and can’t wait to meet their new and returning learning space children.
Just a reminder about the learning space structure for 2023:

Kaiapoi/Hopara - Year 5/6 - Bridget Chilton (Team Leader) and Nick Burson
Horotueka/Tuhura - Year 3/4 - Paula Gray (Team Leader) and Holly Greenslade
Kaikanui/Whakarewa - Year 1/2 - Sue Edwards (Team Leader), Hayden Smythe and Kate Colbran (part time)
Connect Day
On Tuesday 31 January, we will be holding our annual Connect Day. This is an opportunity to meet/catch up with your child/ren’s learning space teacher/s, find out more about the classroom programme/s, and gather some important upcoming dates and information.
Connect Day Blocks:
6 sessions
Session 1 - 8:30am to 9.30am - Years 1, 3, 5 and 7
Session 2 - 9:30am to 10.30am - Years 2, 4, 6 and 8
Session 3 - 11:00am to 12:00pm - New Entrants, Years 3, 5 and 7
Session 4 - 12:00pm to 1:00pm - Years 2, 4, 6 and 8
Session 5 - 1:30pm to 2:30pm - Years 1, 3, 5 and 7
Session 6 - 2:30pm to 3.30pm - Years 2, 4, 6 and 8
Parents/caregivers are asked to select a 10 minute block of time fortheir child/ren. This then indicates the hour of time you will spend in each learning space. For example, if you select 8.40am, the Connect Day block that you will attend is from 8.30am-9.30am for that child in their learning space. Alternatively, if you selected 9.20am-9.30am, you will attend from 8.30am-9.30am for that child in their learning space. If you have 2x children in a learning space, please book 2x 10 minute slots in the same 1 hour block.
The 1 hour blocks will be structured with a 10 minute catch up with all of the children and parents/caregivers at the start. Then for the other 50 minutes, you will stay in the learning space, connecting with other children and their parents/caregivers and maybe completing some information gathering activities with your child/ren. During this 1 hour block, you will also meet with one of the learning space teachers at the time you have selected.
Please email me if you have any queries - k.barrow@clarkville.school.nz I am always happy to help (this will be my first Connect Day at Clarkville also - every school always does it a little differently).

Congratulations
Congratulations to Sophie Lawson who won a teaching position at Harewood School in Christchurch. We were sad to lose Sophie as a member of our team, but very happy that she has secured a position at another great school. This was initially announced to the community at the Prizegiving Assembly on the final Friday of Term 4 2022 - I thought I should include this information here also in the event you were not able to make it. This information was not available for the final newsletter of 2022.

Teacher Only Day for Term 2
Towards the end of 2022, The Ministry of Education announced that New Zealand primary and secondary schools will receive 4 Teacher Only Days, 2 in 2023 and 2 in 2024. These days have been provided by the Ministry of Education for schools to work on the implementation of the refreshed national curriculum. The first of these for 2023, must be taken during the first 2 weeks of Term 2 2023. Schools are still waiting for information on rules regarding when the other 3 days must be taken.
ANZAC Day, a Public Holiday, is Tuesday 25 April, the second day back of Term 2 2023. This would mean that the children would return for one day at the start of Term 2 and then this would follow with ANZAC Day on Tuesday. Clarkville Te Kura ki Waimatao will take the Ministry of Education announced Teacher Only Day on Monday 24 April 2023. This will move the start of Term 2 back to Wednesday 26 April for children. We think this makes the best sense and is easier for families to plan for. Just wanted to give our community an early heads up.
Looking forward to catching up with all of the children and parents/caregivers on Tuesday 31 January, initially for 1 hour depending on the time you have chosen for Connect Day and then everyone together on Wednesday 1 February. Enjoy the end of the holiday break and make good use of this awesome weather. Tell your child/ren that Kris hopes that they have been looking after their parent/s/caregiver/s!
Take care
