General News! Week of January 30 - Feb. 3rd
Monday Greetings!
New week, fresh start! The good news is that we saw many students making a real effort to focus on their studies and get themselves back on track for success. Thanks to all of you for the extra support from home! The trick will be to keep that momentum going strong for the remainder of this semester...
We do want to remind you that our after school camps have taken on a new purpose this year. Our intent is to have an opportunity to spend some small group time working on skills that we can re-mediate, reinforce, and accelerate various skill sets. This is not just a time to finish up, or make up missing work. Students who need that extra support on Thursday afternoons are more than welcome to be there, but should know which teacher they need to focus their attention with that day, have permission, and complete the necessary task/s. Students who are a distraction during this time, will not be invited back.
Help us , help you! If your child has missed an assignment for any reason, they have 3 days to complete it and turn it in. This can be done before school 6:45-7:15 daily, On Wednesday afternoon during RRAP, and on Thursday afternoon after school with a signed permission form. If none of that works out for you, please let us know, and we will try to make other arrangements with you.

Social Studies- Mr. Salser
This week the students will be diving into the Jim Crow Laws, the National Pencil Factory incident, the Women's Suffrage Movement, and Georgia politics in the early 20th century. The students will have a quiz this week covering the notes unit 5 lesson 1.
Science- Mrs. Allen
This week in Science, we will be moving to a new unit: Forces and Motion. The great majority of the students did exceptionally well on our mastery assessment over waves last Friday. Two of them even made a raw score of 100%! I am very proud of all the hard work the kids put in to making sure they passed. Monday is the last day to get finished with Electromagnetic Waves and Light in Mobymax. Students have been told many times that if they did not complete these assignments, they would be taking zeroes in the gradebook for them. They were given more than enough class time to complete these, so a zero shows a lack of effort. Tuesday, we will begin talking about speed, acceleration, and velocity. We will also start discussing motion, distance, and time, which will lead us into our first lab for this unit. We will be applying some math concepts this unit, so I hope these kids are ready! Let’s have another great week!
Math- Mrs. McKinney

Language Arts- Ms. Waxman
This Week In Language Arts:
With the Assesslet Writing test out of the way, we are just wrapping up our argumentative focus. Our final project will involve taking a look at teen drivers and asking the question... "Is 16 Too Young to Drive...?" Students have been asked to take a stand on this issue, and use textual evidence to support the stance they have taken. This topic is very real for them...right around the corner! They are creating their own brochures that will state their side, as well as the counter-argument.
In grammar we are continuing our look at "verbals"...verbs that are not acting like verbs. We have already taken a look at participials. Today our focus was on gerunds, and then on to infinitives! Many students are lacking a strong background in the area of grammar, and will need to work on reinforcing their skills for better understanding. I will be placing some study links in their Google classroom.
I am super pleased to report that many students have gotten on board the reading train!(Whether that was due to their electronics being confiscated, limited use, or just encouragement from home to get it done,...it is working!) Let's keep it going, Book 2 is due this Friday, Feb. 3rd.
NEWSELA is proving to be time consuming for me to monitor, due to so many students not taking advantage of this wonderful reading tool. In the interest of cutting down on the time it takes for me to check in on them, and getting them reading some non-fiction, I am asking them to go back to TweenTribune for at least this week. Their grade will be based on their comprehension average. This week's requirement is 6 articles by Friday at 4 pm.
