Big picture

Dear Parents & Caregivers,

The term is flying along as we near the end of Week 4! I trust all our Mothers had a wonderful day on Sunday and enjoyed the wonderful gifts children may have made in class or bought at our P&F Mother's Day Stall. Thank you to all those who attended our Mother's Day Breakfast last Friday, we had a great turnout and it was fantastic to see so many of our community coming together. Hopefully, it was the start of no cooking or cleaning duties for the weekend and minimal sibling disagreements!

School Photos

A reminder to parents that a note was sent home this week regarding school photos. Children are to wear their full winter uniform, including shirt, tie and jumper. Please refer to the note sent home (which I have also attached below).

NAPLAN - Year 3 & 5

This week our very brave Year 3's have been undertaking the NAPLAN Assessments in Writing, Language Conventions, Grammar and Numeracy. They have handled their first experience of NAPLAN exceptionally well and navigated the formal testing period with maturity beyond their years. Year 5 will undertake their NAPLAN assessments in Week 5. These tests are a snapshot of your child's progress and forms part of many assessments and judgements used to determine progress and achievement. More importantly, they provide an opportunity for our school to reflect on our teaching and learning as educators and identify areas for improvement.

Unwell Children

A gentle reminder to parents that if your child is unwell, please do not send them to school. I realise this can be very difficult with work, siblings and other commitments but as a school community, we need to be respectful of all children and families by not spreading the illness. If your child is away, please send written confirmation to the class teacher or

Staffing - 5B and Mrs O'Reilly

I am pleased to announce that Mrs Jo Richardson has been appointed as the Year 5B teacher for Semester Two, replacing Mrs Selyer during her time up in the Kimberley. After an application and interview process was conducted with the leadership team, Jo was the successful candidate appointed. Jo will be stepping down from her role as Treasurer and is looking forward to working in Year 5B alongside Mrs Bond. Our staff and children are looking forward to welcoming Jo as an official staff member next term.

Whilst we welcome Mrs Richardson onto staff, Mrs Jane O'Reilly has informed the School Advisory Council that she will be retiring from Catholic Education at the conclusion of 2021. Mrs O'Reilly has been literacy support and Reading Recovery Teacher at our school for the past 6 years and over 35 years in Catholic Education. We will celebrate her contribution at the end of the school year.

Parent Conversation Starters

If you're anything like me, as a parent it can sometimes be like drawing blood from a stone when asking how the day was for your child! Often, finding out more information can be achieved with some more nuanced questioning as a parent. If your child gives you the standard 'good', when asked how their day was, try using some of the parent question starters I have attached. We will promote further resources in the newsletter in the future to encourage positive parent/child relationships and promote the well being of our children.

Friends of Francis

To further encourage our positive culture we are building here at St Francis, the Friends of Francis system has been up and running for the last two weeks. Information on how we recognise and reward children displaying our values was sent out through SeeSaw and next Friday 21st May, will see us draw our first Friends of Francis winners from across the school. The winners will be posted on Facebook and invited to a Lunch with Leadership towards the end of the term. The response from the children so far has been fantastic! Thank you to our Well Being team, led by Mrs Liz Ward for developing and implementing this great initiative. For more information, visit

Finally, my last newsletter was written with much trepidation as we entered the Derby. I'm pleased order has been restored and West Coast once again hold the mantle for another year as the team to beat in the West. With the NBA play-in games approaching, it is an exciting time of year for sport fans!

Have a great fortnight ahead.

Best wishes

Jason Baker

Please keep the children completing NAPLAN tests and the children preparing to receive the Sacrament of First Holy Communion in your prayers.

McCormack Feast Day

Last week the students in McCormack had their feast day celebration. We came together as a school in the morning for a liturgy about Sr Irene McCormack, a Josephite, who was born here in WA in the tiny country town of Trayning. Sr Irene was known for her amazing work supporting and caring for the people of Huasahuasi in Peru. After the liturgy the children were involved in team building activities, before the Yrs 4-6 visited Wheelchairs4Kids. We returned to share a pizza lunch with all McCormack children.

First Holy Communion

An information pack went home last week. It was wonderful to see so many smiling faces at St Andrew's Church on the weekend for the commitment masses. For those families who were unable to make it last weekend, Father Darek has offered this weekend as well.

During the last summer we have experienced large bushfires in W.A. as well as over east. This book ‘Through the smoke’ is a picture fiction book which helps to understand what it is like to be caught in that situation and how the firemen control the fire.

“The fire awoke like a dragon. Its flames licked the sky, and smoke veiled the sun.”

Borrow the book and see for yourself.

This fortnight's student spotlight is on Jesse Smith in KB. Young Jesse was enjoying himself on the monkey bars in the Kindy playground when he fell and fractured his arm on Friday. Despite this, Jesse didn't flinch, kept smiling and hasn't stopped throughout the whole ordeal. Jesse could teach many of us a thing or two about resilience - including Mr Baker! Thanks Jesse (and Elyse) for your very positive outlook on life and not letting something as big as a broken arm get you down!

Congratulations to Mr and Mrs Kinder on the birth of their beautiful baby girl, Eloise Jane Kinder. Eloise was born on Wednesday, 5th May and the whole family are doing very well! The staff are very excited to meet the new addition in the coming months!
