Wow! What a Week!!!
Monday - We voted for our Cinderella Castles and had several Cinderellas and Prince Charmings that came to shop for real estate. The kids not only had to build Cinderellas Castle to specific criteria but they also had to create a video that toured their buyers through the inside of their dream castle. From there we toured a home in Denmark and learned about their Christmas traditions thanks to a friend of mine that lives there. We also began our Global Gingerbread Challenge which will involve paper cutting and folding this year and research about their location. Students will then have the opportunity to Skype with classrooms all around the world and share their creations. Finally, kids worked on a little 3D printer holiday surprise!!
Tuesday - 4th and 5th grade also voted for Castles this week and had to also do real estate tour videos but they had constraints and challenges added to their projects. They had to roll the dice and add additional features as well as have a theme based on a different type of Cinderella. They also worked on a holiday surprise and how an instant challenge called Trimming the Tree. They had 10 minutes to create a Christmas tree using straws, pipe cleaners, a 12-inch piece of tape, tine foil, two sheets of paper, and marbles. The trees had to be self-standing and needed to hold the most ornaments all while having a trunk, branches, and leaves. Finally, we also picked our buildings for the Global Gingerbread Challenge and started to design.
Wednesday/Thursday - Middle School - Due to testing, our classes were shortened this week. We walked down to the historical society to learn about the history of Fulton and what buildings were in Fulton during the 1940s because that is the year that we are going to recreate. Once students had an idea of what they were going to build, we then walked over to the research site and began our research on our buildings. Then we walked back, taking pictures as we went, and got back to schools and started the design and building process. Students had to figure out their scale, perimeter, height, and then the art of paper cutting and folding. We will then light the whole town up using our micro:bits!!
Asynchronous Development - Empathy
Ultimately, your gifted child needs to be taught an “action-based” strategy for living with empathetic anxiety. He should be instructed to ask himself whose anxiety he is really experiencing and what, if anything, he can do about it. He should be told that if he cannot do anything about the situation, it’s perfectly okay to leave. Seeking space in which to regroup is not a sign of weakness. Once your child learns how to apply these constructive methods of anxiety management, he can begin to see his empathy as something productive and therefore valuable. This is, of course, the first step to becoming a confident and empowered individual.
