A Note from Mr. Lines
Mountain View Families and Friends,
Welcome to the 2019-20 school year! We are excited to get our students back! This year will be our last in our current building and we hope to be able to honor and remember the greatness that has occurred in this building since 1958. We hope that you have stopped by the school to see the progress of our new building. If you have not, the progress will amaze you!
The front office is now open. If you are new to the district we encourage you to stop in to enroll your student(s). Enrolling as soon as possible will help us in placing students for the upcoming year.
A big change from last year is that Mountain View no longer meets the federal criteria to provide all students with free breakfast and lunch. Those who qualify for free and reduced meals will need to fill out an application this month. More information is included in the newsletter below. With that change, breakfast will no longer be served in the classroom but will be available in the cafeteria beginning at 8:15am for those who choose to take advantage of it.
One other change is that vehicle traffic (other than buses) will not be allowed in the bus loop in the morning before school (8:15am-8:45am) and in the afternoon (3:00pm-3:30pm or whenever the buses leave the bus loop). Please do not attempt to drop off or pick up students in the bus loop during these times and please share this information with child care providers or any others who may be picking up your student. More information is included in the newsletter below regarding student drop off and pick up. Thank you for your cooperation.

Free and Reduced Priced Meal Procedures
For the past number of years, our school has been eligible for a federal program that allows us to provide meals free-of-charge to all students. Due to overall improving economic conditions among many of our families, this year our school will no longer qualify for this free school-wide meal program.
Free and reduced price meals are available to students who qualify. Free and reduced price meal applications are now being accepted.
Eligibility is determined based on:
Submitted Meal Application: Household income and number of household members (see below for information on meal application process).
No Meal Application is necessary to receive free meals for students who:
- Qualify through Direct Certification. These include students who receive food stamps-SNAP, Temporary Assistance for Families in Idaho-TAFI, Food Distribution Program on Indian Reservations-FDPIR, who are migrants or foster children.
- Are homeless or runaway (see Homeless Liaison at your school).
Meal Application Process
- Apply online at https://foodservice.boiseschools.org or fill out a 2019-2020 meal application, available at schools or the District Service Center (8169 W. Victory Rd., Boise), and return to the address listed on the meal application (Spanish applications are also available.)
- Meal applications may be submitted at any time during the year.
- Only one meal application per household.
- Households must list the name of all household members, each household member’s income and the source of income (foster children can be included on the household meal application).
- An adult signature is required along with the last 4 digits of the adult’s social security number. If a social security number is not available, that information must be indicated on the meal application.
- Boise School District Food & Nutrition Services officials will review the meal applications and determine eligibility. Parents or guardians dissatisfied with the ruling of eligibility may discuss the decision with the determining officials(s) on an informal basis. A formal appeal can be made either orally or in writing.
- The information provided on the meal application may be verified at any time during the school year by the District, other program officials, auditors of State programs and law enforcement officials to look into violations of program rules.
For more information visit the Food & Nutrition Services website or contact: Food & Nutrition Services, 6625 S. Elite Dr. Boise, ID 83716 at 854-4090.

Student Safety Before and After school
Speed limits, pedestrians, and being good neighbors
Being a neighborhood school means that a lot of our students walk to and from school. With the lack of sidewalks in some locations and with the challenges that come with construction around our building, it is important for all vehicles driving around our school and in the neighborhood to obey the speed limit and to be on the lookout for pedestrians. Please help us ensure the safety of each of our students and be good neighbors. We have coordinated with our construction manager for the construction gate to be closed before school and after school to minimize traffic from the construction site and to protect our students who cross Kingston. Should you come to the school at other times, please be on the lookout for construction traffic up and down Kingston.
Drop off/pick up
Dropping off before school and picking up after school should take place along Kingston, at the intersection of Kingston Drive and Armor Street, and along Armor where vehicle traffic can then access Cole Road by heading back via Court Ave. Another possibility for pick up and drop off is Mountain View Park.
When dropping off and picking up students along Kingston, please be aware that Kingston is blocked for vehicle traffic from Armor Street to the construction entrance. This is for the safety of our students as they walk along the sidewalk and gravel on the other side of the street. Turning around in this tight area presents a hazard to our students.
Bus loop
Vehicle traffic (other than buses) will not be allowed in the bus loop in the morning before school (8:15am-8:45am) and in the afternoon (3:00pm-3:30 or whenever the buses leave the bus loop). Please do not attempt to drop off or pick up students in the bus loop during these times.
Pathway to Kelly Way
The pathway is currently open but will be closed intermittently as they work in that area. The construction manager will give us at least 24 hour notice before closing access to the pathway and we will share that information immediately with you regarding the closing and the subsequent reopening of the pathway.
Counselor's Corner- Miss Shearer
Greetings Mountain View family! I am SO excited to come back to school and see you all! For those of you that don't know me (Miss S. :)), here's a little about your school counselor!
I work full-time to get to know all of the students at Mountain View Elementary and provide academic, social and emotional support. I LOVE going into the classrooms to teach lessons, facilitate skill learning in small groups and supporting kids when they need it most. I have a passion for educating our youth on a mindful way of noticing our emotions and harnessing a compassionate view of ourselves, all while learning to respond in kind and respectful ways to others.
I plan to add little tid-bits here and there in the school newsletter on important issues that can happen at school and at home. Please look forward to some great conversational topics to have at home with your child(ren). After our teachers work so hard during the day, your children will also benefit from continuing support at home to battle our world's tough, and sometimes frustrating, societal pressures, so I look forward to teaming up to provide education to your kiddos.
Again, I cannot express how excited I am for this year to start and I look forward to meeting you if I haven't already! Go Bengals!
News from the Nurse’s Office
Mountain View's health office would like to remind parents of immunization requirements.
The Idaho Immunization Law requires that children of grades pre-school through 12 shall provide proof of immunization or sign an exemption at the time of initial enrollment in an Idaho school. Parents or guardians should provide a copy of the student's immunizations to the school at the time of registration, before the student attends school.
Parents may choose to exempt their child from the state school immunization requirements for personal, medical or religious reasons. If an exemption is submitted, and there is an outbreak of the disease for which the exemption is signed, the exempted student may be excluded from school for the period deemed necessary by public health officials.
Additional information about school entry immunization requirements can be found at:
http://www.boiseschools.org/cms/One.aspx?portalId=508306&pageId=1298940
Please visit with your child’s healthcare provider about these requirements. If your child is in need of immunizations contact your physician or Central District Health Department.
Central District Health Department provides all types of vaccines year-round to children ages 0-18. Anyone needing to get their child caught up on immunizations can call 327-7450 to make an appointment. More details are available on the Central District Health Department website.
*Please ensure your child is up-to-date on immunizations and provide the school with an updated immunization record if necessary.
Thanks again,
Nurse Jane
