The Floral Design/Horticulture cluster at Skyline High School participated at the DISD STEM Expo on January 18th! One out of the two booths was the Wizards of Horticulture that Mrs. Seidletz and the horticulture students ran. This booth include informative posters, succulents and even plants visitors could take home, like tomatoes and eggplants!
Horticulture Cluster students were on hand to show their skills of transplanting gift plants or helping those that wanted to plant their own. Students were great at answering questions pertaining to the plants and their Cluster.
In Mr.Coyle's booth, he exhibited aquaponics systems that his Wildlife classes built. Visitors were able to walk inside the aquaponics trailer and transparently see how it works, fish and all! Aquaponics is a form of agriculture that combines raising fish in tanks (recirculating aquaculture) with soil less plant culture (hydroponics). Waste from the fish provides the plants with nutrients so no soil is needed to grow plants, a great way to promote urban agriculture/sustainability.
