Reading
The books we read as a group this week all revolved around the topic friendship. The first book we read was called You Will Be My Friend! We decided that if you really want to make friends you should not yell at someone or tell them that they will be your friend. Instead, you should ask, will you be my friend. In this story, Lucy sets out to make a new friend, but finds it is not as easy as she thought. She tried to act like other any animals and did not really consider their feelings. In the end, she found a new friend when she just acted like herself. We also read the book, My Friend is Sad, by Mo Willems. In this story, Piggie dressed in costumes to cheer up his sad friend, but his friend stayed sad. Piggie later found out that Gerald was sad because he wasn't with Piggie. Once again, we noticed that being ourselves is a great way to be a friend. Then, we read a nonfiction book, Owen & Mzee The True Story of a Remarkable Friendship. This a story of the unlikely friendship of a baby hippo and a 130 year old tortoise. We enjoyed discussing the comparisons between the two books.
Math
We have continued with addition and subtraction, but instead of focusing on combinations within 5, we have progressed to combinations within 10. We returned to using our ten frames. We wrote equations to represent the two colors (yellow and red) on the counters displayed in the ten frame. We also learned how to play 'Shake and Spill'. We put ten bean shaped counters that are red on one side and white on the other in a cup. One partner would shake the cup and spill out the counters. The other partner would write the equation to represent the counters that were spilled. They would then switch roles and continue. Students quickly noticed that there were only so many combinations to create 10.
Learning Stations
This week many of our learning stations revolve around sight words. We got to play many fun games so that we can practice these words in a fun and engaging way! However, our favorite station of the week was subtraction bowling!!!
Tic, Tac, Toe, but instead of x and o each student picked a sight word to write in their space!
Kaboom... pull a sight word, read it, keep it. If you pull kaboom, they all go back in the cup!
Jenga with sight words. We had to read the words while we built the tower then we could play!
Candyland with sight words on the game cards, read to move!
Subtraction Bowling, roll then write the equation!

Past couple weeks
I was informed that the past few newsletters have not gone through and no longer appear on my flyer page. They have mysteriously vanished or I possibly just forgot how to save them appropriately. :/ I have included some pictures below from the previous weeks.
