We believe...

  • School Mission Statement: ALL students will be challenged to obtain the skills necessary to realize their highest personal potential.
  • District Vision: Educational Excellence in a Caring Community
  • District Purpose: Manchester students are provided the stepping stones for success.
District and School Improvement Goals:

Goal 1: All Manchester Community Schools students will become proficient in their literacy skills.

Goal 2: All Manchester Community Schools students will become proficient in critical thinking.

Goal 3: All Manchester Community Schools students will become proficient in mathematical skills.

Goal 4: All staff will engage in the district-wide continuous improvement process.

Change in the Cafeteria

Over break Anita and Irene and I made some changes in the cafeteria layout. The goal was to move the tables away from the walls, scrub the walls, and find a location for the trash cans out of the line of traffic. We will try this layout change for one week and then look for suggestions. After the break, there will need to be continuous reminders for cleaning and clearing their table space and floor space. It is possible we could hire 2 or 3 Cafeteria Supporters as leadership roles for each lunch. They could give kind reminders and help to clear the cafeteria between lunches.

Staff/Faculty Meeting All Staff Please READ

On January 7th, we will need all of the staff not attending the faculty meeting to meet in the Media Center at 3:10 pm. Nurse Judee will give a 15-minute review of the Epi-Pen procedures. Please add 15 minutes to your time sheet. Please let me know if you are unable to stay and we will make alternative arrangements for you to watch the Safe Schools training video section on Epi-Pens.

Nurse Judee will repeat the training for the members of the staff attending the faculty meeting at 3:20.

Please see me if you are not in the building at 3:10 and need an alternative training time.

Faculty Meeting Part Two

Teachers, please fill out the Google Form about MACUL by Friday, 1.18.16.

****Please bring an idea for practicing math facts, addition or multiplication, to the staff meeting. You will not need to share, but we will collect the ideas to use with parent volunteers and staff who have a minute. I am putting an index card in every staff member's mailbox. (If you are not attending the meeting put the card in my mailbox by Thursday afternoon.) Write down a website, technique, game, new idea, or crazy idea that you think will help the children of Klager Elementary become proficient in math facts.

****You will also find an index card for you to share your favorite quote, hopefully pertaining to education and students. This will give me an idea of the philosophy of the staff and we can use the quotes in our messages to families. It is very important that everyone is involved with this project. I will not tie your name to the quote unless you so wish when this is used within our school. This can be tied to 7 Habits or your own personal philosophy. Your quotes could also have a spin toward understanding, like "Students aren't obsessed with electronics, they are drawn to the relationships they bring." or "What is right is right, even if no one is doing it, and what is wrong is wrong, even if everyone is doing it." Have fun, and remember there a million websites with quotes.

I have put your name on the quotes and math fact index cards for me to check off who has returned the cards, please write you quote or math fact on the other side to protect your identity.

Building Updates

The bathroom in the 200 hall has been rekeyed to accept the master key.

The urinal nearest the Media center has been replaced.

The fence around the trash bin was replaced.

The PTO has arranged for Klager Elementary students to enjoy the Mobile Ed Productions presentation of Martin Luther King, JR. on January 13, 2016. The third and fourth grade will report to the gym by 1:00 pm and the Kinder, First and Second will attend at 2:00 pm. I have attached a link for the program.

The assembly will take the place of the Jan. 11th Leadership Workshop.

Field Trip Request Form

I have placed a form in the first mailbox of each grade level. I need this form filled out by each grade level. If you plan to participate in more than one field trip, make a copy and turn both forms in. I understand that some of the events may not yet be booked, so a general time would be preferred. Remember to include the split classroom for second and third grade numbers.

Evaluation Update for certified staff

The state has changed the percentages for Domain 4 from 50% to 25%. Professional Council met and decided to change the 2015-16 Evaluation document to the following percentages:

Article about Food Panty clients

More than 1.7 million Michigan residents struggle with hunger every day. And on average, food pantry clients in Michigan receive the equivalent of less than 1 gallon of nutritious milk per person per year? That's because while Americans are generous with canned and dry goods, many don't think to donate milk because it's perishable.

To help get much needed milk to Michigan food banks, United Dairy Industry of Michigan developed a Text to Donate program to help food banks provide millions of Americans with milk. In addition, we created this "The Dairy Farmer's Gift" video -- a version of "The Night Before Christmas"-- which tells the story of a dairy farmer who gives a calf to St. Nick to provide milk for children around the world. The video ends with a message encouraging viewers to text to donate milk to a food pantry in their area.

Please take a moment and watch and share this video and this important area of need with your community. Together we can make a big difference in the lives of Michigan families.

You can TEXT: MILK to 50555 to donate $5.00, the United Dairy Industry of Michigan will/did match all donations from TEXT to Donate thru the end of 2015.

The following are the proposed dates for Leadership Workshops for Kindergarten through 3rd Grade sessions: Jan. 25; Feb. 8; Feb. 22; March 7; March 21; April 11; April 25; May 9; May 23.

Fourth Grade will rejoin April 25; May 9 and 23rd.

Kindergarten will also meet on the following dates at 1:00 pm: Feb 1; Feb. 29; March 14? (author visit); May 28; April 18; May 2; May 16.

The first grade will meet 12:00-12:30 pm; second grade 12:30-1:00 pm; kinder 1:00-1:30; and third grade 1:30-2:00. We will continue to meet in the Media Center.

The fourth grade will have TEAM in Room 109 from 1:30-3:00 pm with Officer Wion from Jan 11- April 11, 2016.

Technology Presentations to the Board

Is there anyone who would like to share some of the current technology they are using with the Board in January or February? They would love to see eSpark, Ticket to Read, Edmodo, Moby, or anything we use. I am thinking five minutes with students or without? We can send a video of the students working, we can do a live demo, we can attach something to the board notes, what ever sounds fun.

NWEA Testing

The testing window for NWEA opens January 11, 2016. Kindergarten through second grade will take the reading and mathematics, and third and fourth will take Language, Reading , and Math.

The computer lab will be open and Google Doc is attached to sign up for those who need to take the assessment in the lab (kinder through 2nd) or wish to use the lab. I will confirm with the support team that someone will be available to provide assistance during the assessments.

We will set up the test sessions at the Jan. 7th Faculty meeting. Make sure you have your iPad or a device to log into NWEA.

Progress Reports

Mid mark for the trimester will be January 29 and the Progress reports should go home on February 5th.

Ticket to Read

We have 200 + spots for Ticket to Read. Please let me know if you are interested in using this and I will get your class signed up. I will give priority to classes without eSpark.

Walkie Talkies

I have four walkie talkies that have been refurbished and are ready to use. I would like two to go to recess. One with Jeff Waters and the other to the kindergarten playground. The third to the cafeteria and the fourth to the office. When students are sent into the building to use the restroom or go to the office, I would like the playground supervisor to call ahead. If the child is going to the bathroom, call the cafeteria and someone will watch for the student to come in and make sure that they headed outside when finished. If the child is heading to the office, call to Katie or Muriel and they will be prepared for the students arrival. We can keep two of the walkie talkies in the lunch room on the chargers for the kinder recess and cafeteria use. The other two will be in the office. They should be set on channel 1. I do not know how well they work with the current walkie talkies, we can experiment next week.

Upcoming Birthdays

From the Villarreal's

They were surprised! The xBox was a hit and a wonderful leverage tool for getting things done around the house. Also, it has been an amazing source of appreciation, the boys have genuinely expressed thanks and are grateful for the fun things we have done, like going to Kalamazoo to play air soft, or watching a movie, or eating out.
