Parent e-News
Dublin Jerome High School
Jan. 3, 2020
Good Afternoon!
I am excited to welcome everyone back from winter break. Hopefully, it was a little bit like mine that was a mixture of family, friends, and fun. It was definitely nice to have some time to spend with my wife and kids, not be on a schedule, or have somewhere to be. Most importantly we were able to finish The Mandolorian and that Baby Yoda is just so cute...but I digress.
We are looking forward to having students back in the building and start our second semester together. This is a great opportunity to reset and refocus. I would encourage you to sit down and have a conversation with your child about a goal or two for the second semester. (As the parent of a 13-year-old I understand this sounds good in theory but even just attempting may provide some perspective.) If you feel like that you need furhter support or assistance, please do not hesitate to reach out to a specific teacher or school counselor. We will be happy to help.
Below is a variety of information to help keep you updated and informed. Thank you for all your help and support.
Have a wonderful weekend!
Mike

Student Health and Wellness
Social Emotional Learning
We have collaboratively identified the theme of Self-Management with a focus on "regulating emotions and behaviors by using thinking strategies that are consistent with brain development". Throughout the 2nd semester, students will be exposed to discussions and strategies and in their classrooms that will help them deal with situations in a healthy manner.
We hope by being intentional with this work we will be able to provide students with tools that help them develop healthy behaviors when faced with worry or anxiety.

Dublin ACT and Nationwide Children's Presents: Know More Do More
Every day, we hear stories about the prevalence of opioids in our communities — particularly, prescription painkillers — and the dangers these medications pose, especially when it comes to our kids.
The Dublin ACT (Adolescents and Community Together) Coalition, a team focused on preventing and reducing youth substance abuse, partnered with Nationwide Children’s Hospital to develop a series of guides schools, parents and communities can use to prevent and reduce alcohol and other drug misuse in their communities.

From the Counselors Desk...
Mid-Year reports
Some colleges and universities will request mid-year reports, which is essentially an update of progress through the end of the first semester. We will be able to begin processing requests for mid-year reports after first semester grades are finalized in January.
If seniors are applying to a college or university that needs a mid-year report, please email Mrs. Peggy Kill at kill_peggy@dublinschools.net to make the request. Please note that not all colleges will require a mid-year report. It will be evident on the application if it is required. Please see your Jerome School Counselor if you have any questions.

January 9, 2020: Human Trafficking Awareness
One of our Jerome seniors has been completing her YPA internship with Theresa Flores who is a CEO and author on Human Trafficking. As a culmination of the internship, our student has put together a night for Theresa to present to students, parents, community members on human trafficking awareness. The focus will be for seniors and parents of seniors as they get ready to go off to college.
7:00-8:30 PM, Emerald Campus Orange Commons
January is National Human Trafficking Awareness month, and Ohio is a hotspot for this criminal activity. On Jan. 9, from 7-8:30 PM, Emerald Campus will be hosting speaker Theresa Flores to share her experience with human trafficking: Slavery in the Land of the Free.
Theresa is a survivor of human trafficking. At the age of 15, living in an affluent suburban neighborhood, Theresa was trafficked to men as a part of a sex trafficking ring. After two years of trauma, Theresa was able to escape the cycle of trafficking and move forward.
Theresa understands that not all victims are so lucky. She has worked to combat human trafficking through advocacy and raising awareness. She is an award-winning author of several books, including The Slave Across the Street, and has worked with government officials to develop policies to help these victims.
As students grow, it is important to understand the reality of human trafficking so that they may not become victims themselves. If you would like to learn more about human trafficking, how to recognize the signs, and how you can help end the epidemic of human trafficking, please join us in the Orange Commons at Emerald Campus Jan. 9.
