Regional Basketball Tournament
Our girls and boys basketball teams will play in the Regional Tournament at Wallace State Community College on Friday. The girls play Hartselle at 12 p.m. and the boys take on Columbia at 1:30. If the teams win, they play again on Tuesday, February 20, at 12:30 p.m. and 2:15 p.m. Let's go, Trojans!!!
Tickets are $8. Students can purchase tickets at the gate or online at https://gofan.co/app/schoolAHSAA. Students should also plan to bring money for concessions if needed; food will not be provided.
- Friday will be a full day excused absence for students who return a ticket stub or online ticket to Mrs. Helton.
- To be excused, car riders MUST return a ticket stub, with name printed on it, to the specific box in the Attendance Office.
- Students who would like to ride the free pep bus MUST turn in a parent permission note to Mrs. Weir, not teachers, on Wednesday 2/14 or during the day on 2/15.
- Because we will not be in school on Monday 2/19, students can also include permission to ride the pep bus on Tuesday 2/20 in their note.
- Cut-off for turning in pep bus notes will be 1:15 PM on Thursday 2/15.
- Pep buses will be departing at 9:30 AM and returning around 5:00 PM.
Students who ride the pep bus to the games MUST ride the pep bus back to the school from Wallace State, NO EXCEPTIONS.
Calhoun's Honors Scholarship
The Calhoun Community College scholarship application deadline is rapidly approaching (March 1). Several students who meet the qualifying GPA (3.5 and >) and ACT (24 and >) have begun the process but have not completed the Honors Program portion of the scholarship application. Only applications that are fully complete will be considered for the fall Honors scholarship. Please feel free to contact us with any questions or visit our web page (www.calhoun.edu/honors).

Spring is around the corner, and we are ready to celebrate the season with lots of exciting events. Please check your calendar and let Joan Morehead know if you want to be part of the fun! You won’t want to miss all the smiling faces.
1. February 24, 2018-SPRING INTO SUMMER, Burritt Booth at Space and Rocket Center, 9:45-1:00, 2 volunteers needed
2. March 26-30, 2018-TAILS, TALES and TRAILS SPRING CAMP, 8:15-2:30 and 1:45-5:30, 1-5 days, 3 volunteers needed
3. March 31, 2018-EASTER EXTRAVAGANZA, 10:30-3:00, 6 volunteers needed to give out candy and prizes
4. April 6-8, 2018-FOLK LIFE FESTIVAL, Friday 8:30-1:45/ Saturday 9:30 to 4:15 or half day/ Sunday 11:30-4:15, 8 volunteers needed each day. You even get to dress up in historic clothes!

Parents, there are no fee waivers for the $100 graduation fee. ALL seniors must make this payment asap. Balfour is our vendor, and all payments are made directly to them. Drama Club: Any Drama Club member interested in attending a show this Friday or Saturday night, please let Mrs. Brady know. You're a Good Man Charlie Brown is playing at Lee High School for a donation to the Cancer Foundation, and Smoke on the Mountain Homecoming is playing at HG United Methodist Church.
Week of February 19-23
Added Instructional Day-February 20: To make up for the loss of instructional time due to weather, students will have a regular school day on Tuesday, February 20.
Junior Optimist: The next Junior Optimist Club meeting will be on February 20, 2018, in Mrs. Thompson's room before school at 8:10 a.m. or after school at 3:35 p.m.
WorkKeys: Seniors will take the WorkKeys test next Wednesday, February 21. This is a very important test for our seniors. The test will begin around 8:30 a.m. and end around 12:30 p.m. Seniors will be allowed to check out after testing with a parent note.
Mock ACT: All other students in grades 9-11 will take the Mock ACT on February 21. This test provides invaluable practice for the real ACT. The results will show students and teachers the areas that need improvement. Students in grades 9-11 will have a normal school day after testing.

Method Test Prep: All Hazel Green High School students have access to Method Test Prep, an online course that helps students build their ACT and SAT test prep skills. Students who use Method Test Prep’s online program to study for the ACT and SAT tests have increased their scores on the ACT by 3 or more points, and on the SAT by 120 or more points! Email cstewart@mcssk12.org for your access code and sign up instructions.
Work-Based Learning Application Process: Students interested in participating in the Work-Based Learning Program for the 2018-2019 school year must submit the following by Friday, March 16:

ACT Information for 11th Graders: 1. ACT Prep information was sent home Wednesday on a blue piece of paper. The page has directions, the website, and personalized login information for access to the materials. 2. The ACT given to juniors through the Alabama State Department of Education is on Tuesday, March 20. If your child is a current junior, they are already registered for this exam. 3. We will be completing the pretest portion on Tuesday, March 13.

Trees for The Trojan Trail: The Trojan Trail has been a great addition to the community. We have had tremendous positive feedback from it and lots of people in our community are using it. The next phase is to add some trees along the 3 mile path. We are entering tree planting season, and we will need to help make it happen. We could easily use 300 trees to help enhance the trail. Please consider sponsoring one or more trees. Tree cost varies but a good starter-type tree usually costs $75-$100. Perhaps your Sunday School class, civic group, business, or even your family would like to make a donation. If you have a tree and want to come plant it yourself, just let me know. If you would rather make a donation, you can either drop it by the main office at the school or you can give online. 100% of the donations will go toward buying and planting trees along the trail. Revision to Pre-Approved Absence Policy- Students requesting pre-approved, excused absences will need to turn the form in to Mrs. Sharp at least 20 days before the planned absence. Forms can be found on the school website.
Procedure for Riding the Bus with a Friend - Any student who plans to ride home on a bus with a friend or to another address should follow the procedures below. No student will be allowed to ride to a different address without verification of parent/guardian approval by a school official.
1. A parent/guardian note should be turned in before first block to the receptionist desk at the back of school. The note should contain the address and information for the bus driver and should include the date and a correct phone number for verification purposes.
2. Pick up the verified note from the receptionist during lunch.
3. Give the note to the bus driver when entering the bus at the end of the school day.
Parenting Assistance Line: PAL is a service where anyone can call a toll free number 1-866-962-3030 and receive useful, practical information and assistance with developmental and parenting questions and concerns. Available 8:00am – 8:00pm (central time) Monday – Friday.
Recycle: Going green at “the Green”. The Hazel Green High School Special Education Department needs your old cell phones and ink cartridges. Items to be recycled can be given to a Special Education teacher or left for collection at the office. Your support of our recycling fundraiser is greatly appreciated.
Reward Cards: Parents/Students/Employees, please remember to use your reward cards when you visit Publix and Hazel Green Pharmacy. Every time you have them swipe your card, HGHS will receive a portion of the sale. If you need a reward card, just stop by the main office to pick one up.

Driver’s permit: Students /Parents, remember to pick up the Student Enrollment Form before you go to get your permit. The driver’s license department will not allow you to take the test unless you have this form and it cannot be faxed after you get there. These forms are good for 10 days only.
Loyalty Reward Tags: (Hazel Green Pharmacy Loyalty Key Tag Program) Parents/Students/Employees, please remember to use your loyalty key tag when you visit Hazel Green Pharmacy. Every time you purchase a Prescription/Gift/OTC have them swipe your tag. HGHS will receive a portion of the sale. If you need a loyalty key tag. Just stop by the main office to pick one up.
