Origin of World AIDS Day
Since 1988, events around the world are hosted to unite people in the fight against HIV via education, support those infected with HIV, and remember people who have been lost to the deadly disease.
Infection rates
According to the National Aids Trust, over 34 million people worldwide are currently infected with HIV.
Mortality statistics
Over 35 million people around the world have died of HIV and AIDS since the virus was identified in 1985.
Transmission of HIV
There are 3 ways to transmit the HIV virus: unprotected sex, sharing needles, and mother-to-child via pregnancy, childbirth, or breastfeeding (perinatal transmission).
