News & Notes from Josiah Haynes Elementary School

February 11, 2021

PRINCIPAL'S MESSAGE

Dear Families,

A few notes and highlights from in and around Haynes School as we head toward February break...

---- Earlier this morning you received a letter from me previewing our plan to launch COVID Pool Testing at Haynes School after vacation. This surveillance testing, a partnership between local school districts and the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, is an additional layer of mitigation in the fight against COVID-19 and in support of our efforts to keep our schools healthy and safe for our community. Please sign your child up at your earliest convenience. As always, please be in touch with any questions.

---- I have the privilege of serving on the district's Equity Committee. At Monday night's Sudbury School Committee Meeting, the committee approved our proposed Equity Statement. You'll be able to find that statement in today's newsletter.

---- Haynes educators recently participated in professional learning around anti-racist and anti-bias practices. Please read on to learn more about this experience, and some related next steps we're excited to take here at Haynes School.

I wish you the best for a wonderful February break. I know that for many the traditional opportunities available to us during vacation week are limited right now. I do hope the week allows your family and you the opportunity to make memories together. When we return we begin to turn the corner toward spring and all that we hope it holds for us.

Sincerely,

Jeff LaBroad

Principal

Sudbury Produces Video to Teach Students About COVID POOL TESTING

Parents are invited to preview the video that students will view at school after vacation ahead of COVID Pool Testing. All classes will view the video together and teachers will facilitate conversations with students. If your student expresses concern about pool testing or anything COVID-related, please be in touch with Haynes Nurse Lisa Nigrelli, School Counselor Veronica Rogers or your child's classroom teacher.

Join the Haynes Equity Leadership Team

Haynes School is organizing a school-based Equity Leadership Team, comprised of interested Haynes staff members and parents. The aim is to identify priority goals and opportunities to enhance the equity of our educational program and the inclusivity of our community while brining Sudbury's Equity Statement to life at our school.

If you are interested in joining the Equity Leadership Team, please email Mr. LaBroad at jeffrey_labroad@sudbury.k12.ma.us

Haynes Students spend time with authors as part of Celebrate World Read Aloud Day

Haynes is grateful to the many authors who shared their work and talked about writing with us as part of our celebration of World Read Aloud Day on February 3. Each class connected with a published author via Google Meet. Below, a few scenes from the day! Thanks to Literacy Specialist Megan Ring and all of our teachers for helping to coordinate this special event.

Haynes Educators engage in professional learning around anti-bias teaching practices

On January 29 educators across Sudbury gathered virtually for a day of professional learning centered around equity in education, with a specific focus on anti-racist and anti-biased practices. We began with Cyndi Weekes Bradley, who spoke about what equity looks like in an educational setting and strategies for creating an open and innovative learning environment grounded in equitable practices. Staff then attended sessions facilitated by educators from IDEAS (Initiatives for Developing Equity and Achievement for Students). In addition to work on equity, educators engaged in several specialized workshops on instructional programs and trainings -- everything from curriculum to CPR!

Kindergarten Registration is Now Open

Click here to visit our district kindergarten website for more information and directions to register.

We have received questions from parents wondering if they should be enrolling in kindergarten or waiting an additional year. Our talented educators are aware of the concerns and loss of social opportunities of our youngest students. Our teams are ready to help our eligible incoming students succeed whatever their developmental milestones may be. The first few weeks of kindergarten curriculum will be all about acclimating to a new setting and learning through play. Our district priorities will be focused on social-emotional learning and how to support a thoughtful transition plan for our youngest learners given the loss of opportunities during this unusual year. Our teams will support incoming kindergarteners on how to develop self-advocacy skills and the learning of how to be an integral part of a larger community.
