Viola's identity

Viola identifies herself as a woman to her close allies, but to hide her identifies herself as a male eunuch to Orsino and his allies. "I'll serve this duke. Thou shall present me as an eunuch to him" (I. II. 51-52). Viola is going to travel to Illyria and serve the duke because she doesn't know what to do after the ship wreck. Viola knows it isn't safe to travel around as a woman so to help herself she hides her identity and serves Duke Orsino. Viola's close family and allies know that she is a female, but to protect herself she hides herself as a male in order to keep her job and protect her, because at the time period woman were vulnerable to crime because they weren't as dominant as males.

Viola's Gender

Viola's experience with pretending to be a male isn't the greatest experience ever, one encounter with an angry knight almost made her revealed herself as a woman to save her life. "Pray God defend me! A little thing would make me tell them how much I lack of a man" (III. IV. 272-273). A knight ( secretly Sebastian) threatens to dual her in sword fight, viola, knowing she is a woman and lacks a mans strength. being threaten almost made herself reveal he true identity to protect herself. he gender limits her abilities like defend herself from a knight.

Viola's Perception

The view on viola from other characters throughout 12th Night is full of different opinions, on that stands out is Olivia's. " I do i know not what and fear to find Mine eye too great a flatterer for my mind "(I. V. 283-284). When viola presented her self as a eunuch to Duke Orsino and served as a messenger to Olivia from Duke, she quickly had fell for his good looks. Viola was an easy person to get along with, but since a lot of people like "him" it began to backfire by making people jealous of the servant. Viola was hated by a few because of the Olivia affair and other characters became jealous.

Comparing myself to Viola

Things i have in common with viola is the ability to my ability to get people to like me and make allies. viola uses her allies in conflicts during the story, i have had experiences like this were my friends helped me through a conflict.

Differences in me and viola are her lack of man, and her hiding her identity from characters in the story. Viola also is endangered to travel across the country as woman, which is different than any of my experiences in my country.

Viola's Identity

Viola views herself as athletic and confident high school girl, when her soccer team was cancelled for the season her confidence lead her to try out for the boys soccer team, but the boys thought it was a joke in Shes the Man, her boyfriend, who plays for the boys soccer team, told her shes not playing with the boys because he doesn't want her to get hurt, Viola told him that their relationship is over (Shes the Man). Violas athletic confidence and desire to play soccer lead her to pretend to be her brother to try out for the soccer team at his school. She sees herself as capable to compete with boys. Because her team got cancelled this drove her try out for the boys team at Illyria.

Viola's Gender

Viola isn't great at pretending to be her brother in Illyria, Viola was almost caught being a girl multiple times throughout the movie. Viola when she moved in with her room mates and presented her as a boy they saw "he" had tampons in her bag, her excuse was she got really bad nose bleeds (Shes the Man). Viola when she could she returned to her original self, like at the carnival where she kissed Duke Orsino in a kissing booth. Duke later asked "Sebastian" actually Viola, if it was okay that he kissed her sister.

Viola's Perception

The many different characters all had many different views on viola. when she went to Illyria as her brother she was seen as a "nerd" and school boy. She seemed to be the most incapable player on the team in Illyria. She was always had a thing with her roommate Duke Orsino, she liked him through out movie but couldn't reveal her true gender, she accidentally called Duke Orsino hot in the locker room when he told her no girls will ever like him (Shes the Man). Duke thinking that Viola is actually a guy was kind of questioning viola. Viola in the movie had friends help her popularity by having her ''sweet talk'' her friends in front Orsino and his friends.

Comparing myself to Viola

Things me in viola have in common are her ability to make decisions in critical times. In the movie viola always had a way out of something and decision making skills that seemed like unbelievable luck.

Differences in me and viola are her motive to pretend to be her brother and beat her old school in soccer, her drive is what made the plot surrounding the story and ability to make it all happen at the end of the movie.
